Okay. So how do levels work? I have Photoshop elements 5.0, and everyone is always talking about levels/
But what do they do/How do they work?

Levels let you adjust brightness in an image's histogram. First Google hit is an explanation of and tutorial on using Levels.

I think PSE 5 now has Curves as well -- you should definitely check that out. Curves acts much like Levels, but does it with a lot more control.

It doesn't have curves in the conventional photoshop sense. Frankly I wouldn't even call it curves. You can't physically move and adjust the points on the chart. They are just preset point and click adjustments with some sliders.
