I've been toying around with the idea of learning about studio lighting and photography. Please take a look at my first attempt and let me know if I am off in left field. The theme is "old" and these are my wife and my favorite stuffed animals from our childhoods.

Cute Idea, I think it turned out great.

Ha! I was just playing with studio lighting myself with some new equiptment. Some from christmas. Some homemade (see setup image lol).

Setup:

Setup is SB600 from above, to the right, and a bit behind with a homemade snoot(I need to spray paint the outside, eh?), tripod for flash and a Nikon SC-28, Nikon D50, 50mm prime, f/8. First image is normal 2nd and 3rd are -2 flash. I intentionally shot against a cluttered background to test how well the snoot directed the light. Me likey!

Eug, glad to see your snoot. I was playing around with some new lighting as well and my foil snoot wasn't doing the trick. Yours got me thinking a little. THanks!

Thanks.

Great source for lighting tricks is Strobist. One of the articles is about GoBos (or go betweens AKA barn doors) and snoots.

I actually split the seam and lined it with HVAC foil tape. that's why you can see foil on the outside edge. I resealed the edge with another piece of foil tape.

I hope I haven't hijacked Nathan's thread. I want his sock monkey to get the attention it deserves.

Thanks everybody! Eug, I like your single light source idea, they came out great. I wanted this picture to be softer than a single light source, but will keep your setup in mind for the future.

And no problem on the hijacking, it is all good. I think I have you beat on home-brew low cost studio, though. To the left I have an old Vivitar 2600 behind a sheet of cotton muslin to diffuse it. On the right a cheap ($30 new, old now) optical slave bouncing off a white towel. Both units are borrowed until I figure out what I want to buy.

So, in the past I've made my white balance as perfect as possible and gotten pinged because it was too cold. I left this one a little bit warm. Does the color balance look natural to you guys?

This is straight from the camera without post processing?

The sock puppets seem to need a contrast boost?
