Getting out and about for the "where I live" pictures gives me all kinds of time to get potential "street photography" shots. Personally I'll be looking for people chatting during their lunch breaks, or those hard working people clearing paths on our recently snow-covered sidewalks.

I wish it were a bit warmer but I guess it's summer somewhere.

I'd better hurry up and put something about a brown ribbon in my "Goals for 2007".

That's sort of what I'm looking for whilst I'm out and about....I got a cool pic today that's a snap-freeze, but it doesn't have that edge to be a good street photo.....especially since it's a guy in a bucket with a big honkin' chain saw topping an old dead locust tree.

Street shots out here in the country mean something different, yesiree-bob!

I dunno.....AFAIAC, yeah......but what the heck do *I* know?...8>)

Anyway.....let's use this offering as a pick-apart as to why it does or doesn't meet that challenge.....obviously I ruled it out as an entry....

Can you see that the tree section is airborne?

The first problem I see as a challenge entry is that it's a grey day and there isn't anything WOW!!! to really grab you.

You kinda have to have the description to know what's going on here and/or study it closely......WAAAAAAAY past that 3-5 second voting curve.

So there are two major strikes against it, eh?

She's baaack.....
Hi-
Reporting for initiation!
I would have gotten back to you sooner, but at my office, I try to pretend I am capable and effective, so I didn't think writing an ode to Team Suck would be particularly impressive there. I have an image to protect, y'know.

Anyway - although it's not an ode, it's what I've got. Please remember, I kind of suck, so don't look to be too impressed.

A woman named Max took a picture.
It made her feel happy, not richer.
The photo might suck,
But it’s Maxine’s good luck,
To have some new friends who won’t ditch her.

Ten Reasons to Make Maxine a Member of Team SUCK
10. The more, the merrier.
9. She asked, and now it would be kind of awkward to refuse. You could have just ignored her, but you didn’t.
8. She once had a pot belly pig that adopted a blind chicken that rode around all day on the pig’s back. The pig was named Treyf.
7. She likes you. She really, really, likes you.
6. She can be a pain in the you-know-what, and she might not go away.
5. She loves dogs AND cats.
4. She is a pretty good proofreader, and will be happy to proof any legal documents Team Suck may have to produce, to ward off lawsuits and the like.
3. Her last name is Piper, and she did not name her son “Peter.”
2. If she writes a book, she promises to change your names and will protect your identities with her life.
AND
1. She SUCKS!!!!!

And there you be.
Fondly,
Maxine

PS - they don't seem to much like my Fruits entry. And I'm not particularly *&%^%#&^ bothered by it. So that should count too.

I'm really enjoying the Where You Live project. I've caught some neat images I never would've except that I've been carrying around my camera. Hopefully, that'll yield something for street photography.

Gotta go with a humorous take on music, though. The one serious shot I tried was so boring even I nearly fell asleep editing it. :)

Anyway, outside of challenges, I've really enjoyed the results of two of them, and thought you fine suckers might enjoy them, too. They're a study in contrast for time to shoot and edit:

1 minute to see it and shoot it, and about 10 minutes to edit:

About 20 minutes to take the three shots for this triptych, and 2-3 hours of editing (it took a LOT of warping and perspective correction - tutorial coming soon) to get everything vertical and lined up right:

I've discovered the joys of ripping my music CDs on my hard drive. I'm sitting here enjoying a live Harry Chapin concert. :)

Yah - me too. My parents only accepted her when we named her. That way they could tell their friends and get a good laugh out of it, instead of incredulous, horrified looks of dismay. She was one hell of a pig. Remind me to tell you the Rabbi and Treyf Rosh Hashonah story some time - He said it was definitely a first for him!

I'm looking forward to the tutorial. I like the triptych a lot, but something about the left image makes me a little woozy.

Speaking of rocking, Deb, I'm going to embarrass you and tell everyone to go check out this collection:

I just can't believe how many fantastic shots you have in there. I might have committed an act of star-eyed commenting or two.

Very kind of you, Jeff. That folder is there for my friends and family members to keep up with my adventures in Europe. I even stick (*gasp*) snapshot tourist pictures there! :-)

And speaking of adventures in Europe - it's time for another story, but I have to get ready for work. I do have to be home early today because the gas company guys are coming by to do something and all I could figure out from the letter was "13 February, 1300-1500". I figure that means I need to be here, right?

(And here I was going to delete that weird shot of Emma...)

Have you been invited to a team? I'd take you on Team Minus based solely on your initiation. :)

I'd say yes but only if it has some activity taking place. (Specifically I'm thinking people on the track). If it's just a dirt track in a field then it might make it as a landscape, but not so much street photography.

I'd go along with that. 'Street' connotes conurbation, but the essential ingredient of street photography is the capturing of human interaction in places where anyone can be.

Jeff - yes, I have a setting somewhere that saves the history as metadata with the file. I can view it when I highlight the picture in question in the browser thingie, whatever that's called. But I too like skewsme's idea of the zoom browser rating thing. Never tried that. One of these rainy weekends I'll do just that!

Kirsty, what brings you to the Team Suck thread?? Nice to see you, by the way. You're more than welcome to stick around.

I was just loitering to work out how/when it is possible to create a team for Team Suck.. still none the wiser, maybe you can help?
I've finally persuaded some family to jump in the dpc bandwagon with me, they want me to captain a team and not sure we're up to the WPL, plus we're too lazy to wait for the next season.

This helps me a lot, since I never really understood the term 'street photography'. I see it and recognize it, but didn't know why buildings and cityscapes weren't street photography.

If you read back a few pages, you'll see that generally our Fearless Leader (who's really just a figurehead - Mary does all the real work) requests a poem or other creative submission as to why you believe you are worthy of Suck. maxaz1's submission has to be one of the better one's we've had so far.

As for the team thing - we're not overly competitive. Fearless Leader has a secret mathematical (maybe) formula to determine team standings each week, and the winning team has the honor of requesting nominations for YAPPIE and OOBIE awards, then choosing the winner. The highest scoring individual Team Sucker is tasked with commenting on the other Suckers' entries for the week. Other than that, we generally hang out, comment on each other's stuff, provide encouragement, and understand that we're generally misunderstood.

And to the other Team Suck members, I can personally vouch that Kirsty is good people. :-)

Kirsty,

The Suck League is an independent group not affiliated with the WPL - we don't encourage competition .

posthumous is our fearless leader. I am just the dw4 for a squeaky wheel.

1) First you need to pick a team name. You can come up with your own or you can borrow from previously suggested names:

team mercurial - hosting erratic patterns

team mellow - scores roll off our backs, dude

team aesthete - we put the fart in artsy-fartsy

2) After your team name is picked, you would need to have a suitable logo.

3) You need at least 3 team members. Seven is the maximum number of members.

4) The team members would go through initiation.
