i took around 9k of pictures for the past 3 months with my 400D.. yesterday was shooting some event and i was curious that my file numbering didn't reach 10K but instead it reset from the start.. ok i might be lousy at explaning problem, here's a short one.

before shooting: picture number was like IMG_9890

after shooting: the number reset back after the last picture of IMG_9999 to IMG_0001

Question: is that normal for Canon SLR?

Yep, mine's rolled over a few times now.

I think I'm on 25,000 or so, and my wife is probably over 40K by now.

right.. now i felt like a dumb for asking such question.. it's my first though :D but just wondering, how do you know perciesly when someone asking "what's your exact number of picture taken so far?", without flipping through the pictures folder?.. any tricks to get such info straight away from your camera?

I don't think there is a way to know (if there is please tell me too, LOL). I have to go to my folders as well and see how many I have taken (plus I rename them so I can't even look at the numbers to figure it out).

hmm guess that i've got to rename all the files or just let it be.. thanks for the replies.

alfresco Has a link to pull shutter counts off the .NEF RAW files if you have a Nikon.

Try checking the EXIF with IrfanView. On my Canon (not DSLR), way at the bottom I find an "Image Number" which corresponds to thestandard "IMG_0000" image name, but with "100" prepended -- I suspect that prefix will change when I pass 10,000 exposures:

File: - G:\00_Photos_Captures\0702_Feb_Photos\070226\IMG_7066.JPG

Make - Canon
Model - Canon PowerShot S3 IS

Image Type - IMG:PowerShot S3 IS JPEG
Firmware Version - Firmware Version 1.00
Image Number - 1007066
