Jeffrey, for instance, could easily bust 6.0 on every FS with his night monument shots. But he chooses to try new things. Christian's a professional photog, and her control of lighting, etc. is amazing. |
I want to thank Catherine for this post. It sums up my thinking 100%. My time entry is sucking along at right around 5.0, but in taking it I had to solve a few engineering problems and figure out a new way of taking photos.
Although I have to say that my monument shots are hardly locks for high scores. My latest free study demonstrated that, netting a 5.1.

It is currently 73 glorious degrees in Saginaw right now. I know it's just a tease but I'll take it. Hey hipychik, what do you think of this? You must be about the same. |

I've always enjoyed the irony that Team Suckers are as successful in real-world photography as anyone else at DPC. Congrats Xian, Jeb, Mary, and the rest of you, too! I see people posting success stories here all the time. |

Originally posted by Melethia: Shooting for challenges... for me, it just makes me focus on an idea, kinda. I still shoot what I like to shoot, but I also keep the challenge in mind when I'm out and about. Occasionally I even come up with an idea to try something on purpose instead of stumbling across something. Those don't usually go over very well, though. In those cases, yes, I find maybe I "try too hard" or something like that. For my Time entry, I'd shot something on Saturday, woke up to see the challenge, and went back and reshot the same thing. So it was something I shot for me to start with that fit into the challenge quite nicely (score notwithstanding). I tend to do that more than "set up" shots - something I've shot before ends up being a good fit for a challenge so I go back and try it again. Not sure how much I learn that way, though! :-) |
For me, it really depends on the challenge. Stuff like "alternative med" is too specific, I don't go out looking to shoot this stuff. Then there are things like "circle" or "red" where I might have ideas of venues to go shoot photos, though I never have a particular photo in mind. Lastly there is the easy challenges, "rule of thirds" "leading lines" simple stuff that I know I will get something even when I am not trying.
I always have the challenge ideas in my head when I go out to shoot, but generally I am not out to try to shoot that challenge. Of course I do sometimes do some forced shots (usually in the house) and score-wise they tend to do poorly. |

Also just want to send out a thanks to all of TS, for the wonderful comments on my furniture entry. I still need to go and send a bunch of commments out myself, but I have been swamped a bit with work and being out of state is a bummer right now.
Hopefully I will have time to finish up my voting on Red first. Speaking of which, I was surprised on my circle entry. Only two comments, but I got a fave, pretty happy.

Well, my cross dressing model was a no-show tonight, so I won't be in the open challenges this week. I could throw something together for grain, but with so many entries I just don't see the point. |

My guess is someone fat fingered this - hit "post" before they were done commenting. |

Team Suck Policy Statement
I don't make these very often. In fact, I might never make these, but this is a pretty fundamental policy that I'm talking about, and it's a necessary one for our survival in DPC. It has to do with voting practices. Obviously, we are not responsible for the voting practices of our members, but to go further I'd like to suggest some guidelines for how Team Suckers vote:
- We do not share photos with each other and then vote on them.
- We do not vote higher on images just because we think they were made by a member of Team Suck.
- We do not encourage each other to vote higher for certain types or styles of images. We pride ourselves on our variety of tastes and styles.
- We do not encourage any particular voting method, though we might frown at people with 3.67 voting averages and make grumbling noises.
- The only way we might influence voting is indirectly, by enriching everyone's tastes and opening their minds to what can be beautiful, and this sort of discussion is never about an identifiable picture in a current challenge.
Personally, I assumed NikonJeb's statement a harmless one. He obviously likes Catherine's style, so to give something a 10 because it's Catherine's style makes sense. Also, it was specific to Catherine, and not a general statement about voting for Team Suck members. But there were some concerns expressed so I thought I should espouse an official Team Suck stand on the matter of voting.

Words from the wise, thanks for note posthumous.
I always find TS most helpful after a challenge anyways. You guys all give great insight! |

Scores going right back into the "off" mode, thanks. And Kavey, bless her heart, ruined my shot at another "No comments made during the challenge" ribbon on my Circles entry. |

I have a favor to ask.
Could someone please submit a nomination for me for an OOBIE when the time comes?
I am very afraid (even if I got the link to the thread right now) that I would forget and not do it. |

I like the policy statement, it makes things clear. :)
Congrats to everyone who had a shot in Red or Medicine.
May I also say how completely un-shocked I was at the winners of Medicine. Really it was as if I could have looked through the shots and thought "this will ribbon, this will come second, this will be top ten." In fact I did, and it was pretty much as it turned out. Some I think deserve it, others just had me thinking "yawn, here's this concept again". |

Aye, and rightly so. Your shot and Jaded_youth's tea shot are two of the three shots I thought really should have been in the top ten. |

I just figure she'll reply and say she isn't in the Time challenge!
LOL!!! |
I hope TS members aren't voting high just because they think they spot a teammate's work? I'm assuming you mean you voted high because it has things you like in it, standing well on its own as an entry, that happen to correlate with her photos. But I just want to make sure. |
Well......
Maybe I voted it a little higher 'cause I thought it was Catherine's, but the pic in question gets a big bump for an OOB edge to it, it's an incredible capture, and it's also got tremendous personal appeal on a couple of different levels.
OKAY?!?!?!?!?
LOL!!!

I definitely will NOT do color portrait. I've never done one before besides like noraneko said, it's hard to find models and I can't afford to pay what some of these people pay for models. |
Ack!!!
Hey, where does it say that you have to be qualified, have pro models, or do it in a studio environment?
I've been thinking about doing something like the cute kid at the art supply store or the old guy at the diner.........real shots more along the lines of in a natural environment, a la street photography.
Deb, your street photography entry is a terrific example of a portrait in my not so professional, but aesthetic, opinion.
Of course, I have the kid as a fallback, but I've been pretty happy with the way my people shots have been turning out lately.
Go for it!

Oh, wow!
I did not mean to be flip!
I genuinely liked the entry a lot and will thumb it and explain in detail why after the challenge.

I meant no disrespect to the team by my comment, and I also assumed that Catherine would be horrified, in good fun of course, by my comment.
I'm adamant about how I vote as it relates to personal taste.
If something REALLY moves me, if the photographer reaches deep down in my gut, touches my heart, or makes me go, "Oh, COOL!!!!!", they get a bump, extra credit, and special note in the form of my best comment 'cause that's what I want when I offer up my efforts.
That's why timfythetoo made such an impression on me with his comment on my B&W entry.
I apologize for the casual nature of my comment that caused a misconception.
I will go to my room.......8>)

Well, my Circles is creeping up, to my surprise, my Time is too, but I was really thinking that my Time entry was a shoe-in for an above-6 entry. That said, I *AM* happy about my grain shot and will cry myself to sleep if it does NOT stay above 6.

I do not understand the complete dearth of comments my shots get. I guess I just don't inspire feedback with many of my offerings.
Hey, at least I'm not getting roasted!
ETA: Big print for my second ever personal best and above-6 entry!!!!
My Wildlife III almost made it, but trolls beat me down......8>)
