Ah, yes, the chocolate isn't bad here. We have German chocolate, Belgium chocolate, Swiss chocolate - you name it. Should anyone have any particular type of chocolate you've been longing for that isn't available where you are and may be available here, let me know. I'll happily send some off to you!
And thanks for the link! |

Feel free to post reaction club / critique / etc links in the au5 thread. I'm sure many will appreciate it :-)
Speaking of foreign chocolate... Do Snowflake bars only exist in England? I know there're Flake bars (Cadbury milk chocolate) in Canada but the Snowflake (milk chocolate and white chocolate) I've only ever seen there. |

I really miss it all here...

Moose And Elk
The link between the moose and elk is an interesting one, that in the past has caused much confusion simply due to their respective regional names. The moose (in North America) and the elk (in Europe) are actually the same species of animal with differences analogous to those of different races within the human population.
Therefore there aren't really any moose, as such, in Europe though there are elk in N. America (see below).
The actual dictionary entry for ELK is :-
1. The largest existing deer of Europe and Asia.
2. North American wapiti.

I've only ever seen them up close once - on our honeymoon. We saw about a dozen the first day, and several more over the rest of the week. Got close enough to get some pics - but I was only using a disposable camera, so they didn't turn out well.
A couple even had calves with them.
I grew up in farm country - I'm more used to dodging cattle, goats and horses.

The National Elk Wildlife Refuge has the largest migrating elk herd in the US. This is a great spot for a winter vacation, wildlife watching, and skiing. |

Thank you Posthumous for the one and only comment on my Grain entry. The score is currently at 4.7, and I was feeling crumby (grainy?) about photo's reception, until I heard from you. |

I'm about halfway through voting. It's a big challenge, but I enjoy "judging" whether the grain is helping or not. I'm seeing plenty cases of both. |

I'm having to admit to myself that a couple of critical comments (specifically addressing the quality of the grain), are in fact about right. I hang my head. (Mind you, it's still over five, so maybe something works there).
I have a silverfoxx comment in time - thanks.
Oh yes, I looked up 'moose' and 'elk' in the Oxford Dictionary, which gave alces alces for both. I saw a good few when I lived in the forest here, but they're called 'elg', which I suspect is an entirely different species that doesn't feature in the Oxford Dictionary at all.

Heh. And now you know why I swore I'd take a picture of anything BUT a clock, watch, etc. And I did. And Svetlana, you liked it. :)
Posthumous, after the grain challenge is over, I'd love to know whether you thought my shot was affected at all, good or bad, by the noise. I'm really having trouble deciding. I wasn't sure looking at the first grain challenge when grain helped, and I'm still not sure.

jeg sa ingenting jeg ;) but I recognised a lot of entries and somehow I feel everyone recognises me as well so it's deuce ;P
ja!! naturlich! there must be a special kind of "elgs" here that do not like photographers. I saw one with a baby some days ago, had to turn the car, find a place to park (on a motorway), ran to the place, without any hat and coat, and those stupid animals said pffff! to me when I pointed the cam on them and ran away. and that's it!!! I didn't even have time to shoot. they are afraid of me but not the cars.. thi is unfair! |

What about the Reaction Club? This was an idea bucket had for an antidote to the Critique Club. I started a thread called "the Reaction Club" but I was the only member of the Reaction Club and it quickly died down. Eventually, I just gave up and joined the Critique Club.
To specify, a "reaction" is an honest expression of how you responded to a photo. It is just a description of your subjective response, instead of a judgment or a list of pretend rules that you should have followed, or the dimensions of the box you should have stayed in. |
That sounds like a good thing and the Reaction Club is a cool name.
The reason I had mentioned the idea in general was as it pertained to DPC at large, and I was thinking that it would be here as opposed to off-site.
I was thinking that it could be for the DPCers that get disgruntled, depressed, disappointed, wht have you by the dismal voting that is so prevalent in beginners or less experienced, or people who just aren't slaving for the blue.
It also would specifically get commentary designed to involve that "Gut Reaction" that I know I want initially.......and then have some explanation as to what it was that "Grabbed" the person about it.
I don't have as much time as I used to, but I would certainly be good for 3-6 shots a week to do serious reaction and commentary if it was asked of me.
I woukld like to see the list of reactees limited to newbies and au5ers for the time being. |

Thanks! I posted over there. I suppose I should make the same offer here as I made there. :)
I'll comment on anything anyone asks for, provided you do a little work yourself. Send a PM telling me:
1) What you wanted to achieve
2) What reaction you hoped for in the viewer
3) What challenges you faced taking it, which you overcame, and how

Or instead of sending that stuff to Jeff in a PM, post it with your image and then more people can comment, too. |
