I'm nervous as hell - I've got my first "client" shoot next weekend. A portfolio-building session only. No fee for my time, but she's paying for prints.

2 kids, girls, 6 and 8, in their home.

I'm thinking of what I need to take.
- Model release forms
- Copyright release form
- My camera
- Extra battery
- flash
- Backdrops (I've got a tie-dye sheet, and a black blanket)
- Reflector of some kind.

I don't have any lighting though - so I hope it's good light. Well, I've got a set of 500watt work lights from Canadian Tire, but the light from them is a horrible colour

Best wishes, Kashi. I'm sure you'll do great and the Mom will be happy. Natural lighting will work best in and around their home.

Uh, yeah, they would, actually. :) See my highest-scoring shot:

If the air is clear enough, and your angle is wide enough, you can even get the moon and stars in the same shot, because the rest of the sky won't be blotted out by the moon. But to see the stars, you have to use a long exposure (I used 15 seconds), so the moon will be completely white - no detail.

Tht's a beautiful shot! I just love night shots with the moon and stars. I haven't been able to capture one myself, so I thought I would fake it for now.

That's a very nice capture, Greetmir. The man riding the bike adds interest to the scene. Great reflection in the water. It looks like a little country road somewhere in Europe.

Nothing wrong with that! :) For what it's worth, I think your shot looks pretty nice as it is. You did a good job varying the size and intensity of the stars and randomly placed them.

I have been tweaking my light box and I am liking the results ... I still see some faults yet and I am going to have to get fussier with how I am lining it with white paper and the such but so far ... so good ... :)

do you have a window? together with a reflector it can be the best lighting. I was going to shot one extremely cute girl tomorrow, she is one of the best tennis players in norway, and I invited her at midday to use my big windows. good luck! :)
yes, if you don't have a reflector you can always glue some foil to something stiff. and some interesting color or a textuure on your walls at home or outside can make it more interesting than usual backdrops.

Now you know why I used the term Tsarina.

Send the lady a condolence.

Okay, fine, I spend too much time reading about irrelevant stuff that I knew the old usage of the word but it's apropos of the era that Silverfoxx the Great reigned.

Here's my opinion and what I've got in mind for the way I'm doing it.

I've been shooting friends and their kids at random, mostly at church, and what I am going to be doing is shooting some portraits for parents.

I seem to be a natural at bringing out the best in kids and I have told the parents that I only want them to pay me if they're satisfied.

I figure that'll ease my conscience and make me do my best work, and since I'm not buying film, no big deal.

I don't think I'll ever change that idea even if I turn out to be really good at it simply because that kind of reputation will be a good thing to have.

Besides, I don't want to make someone pay for shots they're not happy with as I want return business, and I want anyone I work for to recommend me favorably.

I'd rather do three sittings and have the customer happy than one and have them either say nothing, or worse, tell their friends that they weren't happy.

There will always be a time that I may not be able to meet the needs of the customer, but that's life.

Just my $0.02 US!......8>)

Yikes, poor Svetlana! Bad car crashes are very traumatic. Especially with those broken bones. No dancing for a little while, huh :-( But we are all so glad you are okay! Are you in a lot of pain? I hope not!!!

Kashi - congrats on your upcomign photo shoot!

Having fun playing tonight. I hit Henry's today and picked up a cheap light thing (sorry - not sure the technical name, a slave ? strobe ?).
THIS

Anyhow.

Here's a shot, straight from camera (well, resized and saved for web, but NO editing, NO sharpening, NO colour correction, etc)

Bounced my on-camera flash (SB400) off ceiling.
Used the flash thing as a shoot-through, to camera left.

C&C please

Terrific Picture, Kashi. Wonderful pose, and the parents would be happy.
Just a couple of things (which you probably already know). Left bit needs to be cropped a bit, something gray over there. Also you may have to bump up the brightness, especially if these are prints. They will turn out a bit dark if printed.

Other than that wonderful photo. Looks like you are really enjoying your camera and the new light setup. Look forward to seeing more from your shoot!

Well....I've just entered a shot in Color Portrait that should be resoundingly thrashed.

I like it, but I'll probably get publically horsewhipped by the DNMC Police that feel that it doesn't meet the "Spirit of the Challenge".

It should indicate my inclination to be a lifetime member of this club!

You never know though, maybe some people will "Get it".

There's some serious tongue-in-cheek humor going on with it......unlike my last portrait challenge entry.

I had a blast voting on that challenge too. The really weird thing is that one of the men in a dress looks exactly like my son-in-law. He has been under a lot of stress lately, and I sent the link to a couple of people who really thought it was him. Fortunately he has a good sense of humor.

Bear is so cute. To brighten his face a little, try Filter/Render/Lighting Effects/Omni. I was playing around with that filter and like the effect it had on this shot. The baby's face was shaded by the brim of the hat.

Ok, I'm in color portrait. I'm so excited about this shot I'm considering pulling it just to avoid the inevitable disappointment at the score. But I'll stick it out, I think. There's just one cropping option I'm now agonizing over.

Oh, I'm also in the free study, with another shot I'm pretty happy with.

Now, on to cell phone. I have two ideas, but I'll have trouble getting either one on film err.. electrons by Tuesday.

The heck with the votes!

I go for the comments when I have an entry that I like......and I mean the comments I get here after the challenges.

My Time entry is more than a full point under my Grain entry and IMNSHO, and in Lisa's opinion, it's a MUCH better shot.

Go figure, the voters never seem to view things as I do.

I would way have figured my Grain to be low to mid 5s than my Time entry.

I'll have to wait 'til Tuesday for the comparison, but I hope to get input on my Time entry from you guys Monday morning as it pertains to its own merits.

I may be joining Jeb in the "DNMC" group with Color Portrait. Haven't quite decided yet, though. :-) I won't be in either of the open challenges, unless I want to enter something that's VERY title dependent and not all that good of a shot in Cell Phone....

Lea, I did a very quick edit on your gorgeous young man - notes are with the picture. You had a great shot to start with - didn't need much at all! Nice work.

(It's in my workshop and I'll delete it after you've seen it.)

That was one of the best challenges for ages and the imagination involved made it a pleasure and a great laugh to vote on. Well done to all those who were brave enough to enter :))

I'm in color portrait and cell phone. Melethia, my cell phone is kind of title dependent but...oh well!

Kashi,he is so cute! I just wanna nibble on those cheeks!

Catherine - great comments on my minimal shots. I agree with the comments on the Star especially - I didn't notice the shadows in the back until after I'd finished editing, then found they bothered me, too. My version has those removed, and I dodged the front bright sections a bit. I have two monitors and the one I use most for editing is a bit darker than the other - I need to remember to check it on the lighter monitor. And maybe print and compare so I know which is the truer rendering. The tour guys I like pretty much as it came from the camera. Not all that fond of the B&W conversion but do appreciate that the highlights are a bit blown in it. Thanks much!
