I know a number of us keep "The Photographer's Rights" pamphlet in our backpacks. I noticed mine was last update July 2004. I went to the site of the lawyer who wrote it (he lives in Portland, OR) and found an updated version dated November 2006.

Just wanted to pass it on. I haven't actually read it to see how different it is.

Here's the link to the PDF.

Last time i read it said FILM, not Media or Photographic Media. So it techincally doesnt say that they cant confiscate memory card sjust say film.

Figured during an update anytime in the last 7 years they might have changed it lol.

Ha! Just a couple of hours ago I was packing my camera bag for an event tonight and realized my photogs rights sheet (that is in all 3 of my camera bags) was copyright 2003. :/

Thanks for the update.

Has anybody actually used this out in the field? If so did it allow you to continue doing what you were doing? I guess I don't really see the point of carrying one of these around especially when you can simply communicate your rights verbally.

I didn't think the point of this particular one was to hand it to the person harassing you.

Its written for the photographer, so you know your rights. I have, however pulled it out once when a woman who was harassing me at one of my kids' events. She tried to get me to put my camera away because it was "professional looking", but everyone else's P&Ss were fine. She backed off before she started reading, I think she got that I knew what I was talking about.

I need to stuff one of these in my bag. I'm generally pretty useless in a face to face argument, so having a cheat sheet would be most helpful.

Ya, I have not needed to use it, but we all know the printed word carries more weight than the spoken one. I am most concerned about police and I would not hesitate to hand it to them, ask them to look it over, and then decide their course of action after reading it. It will cut through the bluff I think some cops can rely on to get their way.

I feel better with it in my bag. I hope I never have to pull it out.

A lot of people think that if its in print, it must be true. And I think you can present it as the opinion of a lawyer (or advice from a lawyer) so as to give it more credibility.

Does anyone know if there is such a thing for Australia

Or Canada?

There were conversations before about a Canadian version, but I never heard if anyone found anything. I've not heard it asked or answered about Australian.

Best bet is to take a copy to a lawyer and ask them to review it for local accuracy. You might speak to the originator and get him to post an AUS or CA version. Offer him the differences and the lawyer's contact information.

LOL. So the P&S were fine? Ridiculous. Except for a cop questioning me once when I was shooting a state office building, which I was allowed to continue shooting afterwards, nobody has ever bothered me while in public. However, my gf has on more than one occassion including times when I was out shooting with her nearby. This leads me to believe that maybe it's a male/female thing or they pick on those they feel might be easily intimidated.

I was chased out of a cemetary a couple weeks ago on the grounds that it was private property. I didn't challenge the guy since I figured that it was probably true and possibly an issue of religious sensitivity of which I was unaware since every other cemetary I've ever seen or visited was just fine, but I'd never been to a Jewish cemetary before so maybe different rules applied. That's the only issue I've ever had.

Same here. I'm such a pacifist. I keep a copy in my bag, but if it ever came down to it, I'd probably forget it was there. lol

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't "cemetary" spelled "cemetery"? :)

Oh probably. I may be a grammar nazi, but my spelling isn't always spot-on perfect. There aren't very many people who would catch that one. ;-)

There's probably not a Canadian version because it's so damn rare to ever find any authority figure up here give more than a cursory glance at someone with a camera.

I shoot in malls, on and around bridges, government buildings, police themselves.. you name it.. never had a problem.

I did a quick search and found this article which might be of some use to Canadians...Photography Laws

I shall strive to find additional information in this regard.
