Our little group likes to talk about, or rather complain about, people who "pee on their cheerios." Well, ya know what? A ribbon is a rather large cheerio, and posting a negative comment after it's won is a whole lotta pee.
Why not let that person enjoy the moment? If you didn't like the shot, you could've commented during the challenge and voted. Or you could start a forum thread to discuss how DPC is all mindless drivel (just push over the other threads that say the same thing). Not posting something negative isn't the same as saying you love the shot, but posting has the very real chance of ruining someone's very happy moment.
As someone else has said here, I believe, not every opinion deserves to see the light of day, and I've decided I'm going to restrict post challenge comments on high scorers to congratulations. |
How do I get myself into these things?? LOL. I think I may have been the one to mention that as well but to clarify what I was referring to when I said there was always someone that voted low and posted a negative comment, I meant DURING voting not after...Yeah to post negative after it is obvious that the majority disagrees with you is just being mean, that wasn't my point the one challenge I referred to that I was that person I didn't actually comment on the pic I just gave it a 4, then it got a ribbon I thought "well that shows how much I know!!!"
Okay, I'm gonna quit while I'm kinda ahead before I dig myself any deeper in a hole...I really am here on DPC to have fun and learn and get better at something I love to do, nothing more and in the process if I can help anyone else to do the same I am more than willing. So I think I will now bow out of the heated discussions...I hope everyone has a great night!!!
Jack

Actually, I try to give constructive comments rather than negative, and I hope the people on the receiving end understand that...there are those cases where I just don't know what to say...so I say nothing at all.

One word here...Oakleys, lol...really, I take quite a few sunset/sunrise shots and I wear dark sunglasses when looking through the viewfinder, it's kind of a pain but it really helps...

I'm so glad you mentioned this. I just started experimenting with RAW, and thought the vignette feature was a cool way to "contain" the photo in basic editing -- OOPS, NOT. Thanks for saving me from that mistake. |

Now I've lost track of it, Christian, but you have my sympathies. If it makes you feel any better, Larus lost 4th place for the same reason:

@NikonJeb, I will try to help you to understand what has happened here:
Originally posted by NikonJeb: In the first place, in *NO* way did I call out the commenter in a hostile way. |
This is not true. You called the commenter an "A-hole" and said that they were "tasteless." In another post you mentioned that you were thinking of "sending them a PM and trashing them." You also suggested that the commenter's opinion was invalid because you could not ascertain enough information about him/her to assess their character and ability. You also suggested that the commenter was a "troll." This is hostile behavior.
Originally posted by NikonJeb: I was whining and carping, it was an item of discussion, and since nobody gets to see the comments 'til it's over, and if you would have read this whole thread THOROUGHLY.....you could hardly construe it as hostile, or be able to figure out who the commenter is. |
See above. It does not matter that you didn't mention the commenter's name. Anybody reading this thread could figure it out. This is particularly true because you quoted the entire comment in this forum thread prior to insulting the commenter personally based on your assessment of their participation level. This is considered a personal attack. Please take the time to read Forum Rules #'s 11-14.
Items of discussion do not include personal attacks such as calling out commenters -- whether by name or not -- because they saw a way for improvement in your image. Items of discussion assume good faith in the part of the commenter; this includes the forums as well as image comments.
In addition, when you quote the entire text of a comment and then proceed to whine, carp, complain, insist you are right and the commenter is wrong, use profanity to do so, and don't stop even when your friends tell you that you are wrong, this is not discussion.
Originally posted by NikonJeb: As far as reporting the faux pas, if nobody saw it as a violation, how would this be reported.
This is absurd!
I toss out my opinion for general discussion, get basically told by a half a dozen people that I'm all wet, I try on numerous levels to at least have someone understand my point of view, NOT to necessarily cosign it, and this conversation that is proceeding in a civil manner is deemed hostile and a violation?
Wow......that's really something.
Have a good time people.......after all the crap I've seen heaped on people at different points, this is a disgrace.
You know what?
I'll alleviate the problem.....I'm done here. |
We never wish for anyone to leave the site in a fit of temper; we just try to enforce the rules so that it is a fun and enjoyable place for EVERYONE. This includes commenters with whom you disagree.
With any particular comment, photographers are always free to hold it in high regard, low regard, or no regard. What we are NOT free to do is insult a commenter with profanity and personal attacks, or use the PM system to abuse or harass a commenter.
As always, if anyone has a question about the forum rules, please Contact Us and we will do our best to help.

Oh, man......
I hate this.
Yeah, I did.
That was wrong.
I apologize.

To L2 and the poster in the limelight in particular, and the group in general.....
I have edited my tasteless, rude, hostile post, and apologized publicly......not that it makes it right, but better than nothing I guess.
I actually did not remember being quite so angry.
I'm sorry you had to do that, L2, I really do know better than that, and having been a mailing list admin in the past, I know what it's like to have to step in.
My previous quick apology is really not quite enough, I must spell it out, as I had no hesitancy in stepping in it in the first place.
I think that maybe I should keep my big yap shut for a while since I don't seem to be able to play nice anyway.
Again, my apologies for my behavior.

My lovely little downward spiral on both challenges continues. So far, I've nothing for any of the upcoming challenges... I'll hopefully get out to shoot tomorrow. Going to attempt to play golf today. It's been awhile! Keep fingers crossed the rain stays away for about 18 holes or so... |

Back up over the 6.0 hump.
I've got an image in contre, but I'm not so sure about it. I've got another, totally different one that would fit as well. I'm totally torn about which to enter.

Hello again, It’s been interesting the last couple weeks. 2 computers down, a infected tooth, a side job to finance a camera bag and a better tripod, oh and the TV died.
The outcomesâ€Â¦
My wife’s laptop, sent into repair, hardware in warrantee.
My computer , I had to start from scratch and reinstall the OS, We all know what a pain that is..
The tooth is mercifully gone.
The camera bag, and tripod, well ,another day.
The TV, well what can I say, watching “Happy Feet” on a 52” screen is awesome.
So without any further problems, I shall dust off the camera, and go forth to search for my next 5 something picture ;p.

I've realized I have something of a photography "handicap" lately.
Trying to hold the camera still with my 20-lbs son tied to the front of me has proved "interesting" at best. *lol*
I'll have to get my hubby to use the P&S to get a photo of what I mean I think. He said I looked funny !
Thanks Darren. Where was your trip to ?

lea, have you tried the mei tai slings? they are wonderful, and cna carry the sprog until they're quite heavy, on the front, back or side. and they fold up nice and small.
here's a canadian web site you can order from, or this one has a pattern if you sew. i've used one for ages, and it's great. at 38 ponds, the kid's a little heavy for long term wear, but it's great if he's feeling huggy, and i need to do somtething.

Mei Tei - check
Ring slings are my favorite in general (this photo is almost 2 years old now)
But I also have a Moby wrap, which is what I was using yesterday. This photo is about a year old now.

I need help understanding something. When I go to crop my photo's I get a white line on the sides. I'm using Photoshop Elements 5. It didn't use to do that and it just started. What am I doing wrong and how do I correct it? You can see it on my color portrait photo.
On another note I might not post much, but I'm here soaking up the knowledge that you guys have and that I need! I'm taking lots of pictures just none that fit the challenges right now. I'm working on that though, trying to think creatively. |

When you crop with Elements, if you're selection is even a hair outside the edge of the photo, it fills it in with a white line.
