I have just bought this software and like it so much .. like most things, you can overcook it and then it looks crappy, The HDR type thing if done to excess then it looks too processed (guilty as charged) I find that with Lucisart I can find the happy medium for my tastes without making it look to overdone.

I saw the Dave Hill site and he is very good but a touch too much IMHO.

So this is an old shot of my Daughter Yoko and a very silly ME taken with the D2H. coments invited.

Would this filter be BASIC EDITING legal?

I am pretty sure it should be but just asking

Hi MAK, I researched this for someone else and I'm not sure about Basic Editing legality. It was never brought up before the entire SC though. Can you submit a ticket with your steps so we can all review and discuss it?

I have seen this program (or similar) before. Doesn't this program use several shots to get a finished product?

That would be a joke. It is in practice or in reality, clearly an "Effects" filter and would violate the rule as such.

I found this a while ago. I have been able to replicate the Lucis Art plugins style with these tools and technique. I just could not see spending the cash. This process comes pretty close. The filter download link is provided in the tutorial.

Lucis Look alike! Minus the $160 :-P

Single-photo HDR using tools like Photomatix are legal in basic...

Why is it a JOKE? I am totally serious, it does nothing more than PHOTOMATIX does with HDR and tonemapping... I thought it was a very relevent question.. it is certainly usable within the ADVANCED ruleset and maybe also allowed in basic.. hence my enquirey

I didn't say what you asked was a joke. I said if it be deemed so, than it would be laughable. I am not going to delve back into the Photomatix issue, because it has been discussed. It is an effect filter...plain and simple.

I am all for digital art. I am all for Expert editing. It is a lot of fun and can create wonderful stuff. But let's have boundaries where basic stays basic, and so on. You know?

But Photomatix is LEGAL in Basic editing is it not?

Maybe they will change it soon but for now it's legal ..

Yeah, I had asked you about it and you said submit a ticket. However, I ended up going in a different direction with my entry so it became a mute point. One thing to note about this filter is it can be used in a subtle way to improve detail which doesn't produce a cartoon look. This is one example of that:

My first try with the link Thegrandwazoo posted. Could be better..maybe with more practice. The Lucasart filter is fantastic, but not worth that much money to me at this point.

Thanks for your comment Erick. I will keep that in mind and try it again. Yanko and MAK have done some fabulous work with this! :)

Thanks very much. I cannot leave it alone, have a few more to post, starting with this.. I done some overkill edits too the get that 'dave hill' kinda feel. (not the same as, just similar)

Bit of overkill as promised

I think this is more of a 'Tonemapped' effect

04/07/2007 07:45:25 AM · #20
I like the look alot. I usually vote higher on images like that. (not the overkill one, but you know what I mean.) I always wondered how that look was achieved.
Did you find out if you can use it in basic? If you can, I wonder if you can do it the way that thegrandwazoo suggested.

I also could not see spending $160 for LucisArt and much appreciate the link to this tutorial ... below see the results of my first experiment session with it.

Always fun to try and recreate an effect. I tried this a while back also although I tried to figure it out on my own. Shadow/Highlights Adjustment was what replaced the Lucis Arts part.

I tried the link that was posted and here is what I came up with. Any comments would be great. I would like a more dramatic effect but I cna't seem to get it just right. Any help would be wonderful.
