Nice to get to know a little more about you Lea.
A quick question for anyone, I Have a few shots for Bicycle and I̢۪m trying to decide which one. The question, do you think voters will loose there minds if the cycle has one less, or one more tire in it̢۪s construction? Thank You..

It would be nice to see something not conventional but I'm not normal. |

I have a couple of possibles, any one of which can be a last minute entry, but I'm starting to get more selective these days.....sigh....

You will almost certainly get some DNMC votes and maybe some comments. Unless it's a unicycle on top of a mountain in Iceland with the northern lights overhead. :)

My ideas for Chains aren't really coming together, but I did get some nice shots in the freezing Chicago night yesterday.

My chains bombed in production *lol* As in - took the shots, they looked awful, so I scrapped them.

I'm really struggling now - for creativity, for any ideas at all! Everything I shoot looks dull and uninspired and uninteresting. I was away for a few days, and missed the last couple of challenges, and now I've hit a dry spell. I suppose I'll try again for this round of challenges, but I hate to enter just to bomb bigtime. Of course, I DO have my suckiness to uphold. I guess a lack of inspiration never dstopped me before! LOL

Hang in there and do not feel too bad, you'll get your muse back. I took a couple of months off because I felt the same way. I'm back in two challenges that I know will uphold my suckiness. |

I'm in for chains. Entered the more "DPC friendly" of my choices. I'm with Don - I can see it scoring above 5, or possibly below. |

Thanks for the nice comments on my FS Bob and Catherine. I had higher hopes for this one. Anyone want to give me a critique what could have been done better on this one? |

Kelli I stand behind my comment that I expected this to score better, as the open mouth capture is unusual and the composition is very good. However, I think FS entries score about five-tenths of a point lower than they would in smaller contests, simply because of the stiff competition. Although I got lucky scorewise in this FS, I've been very disappointed with some of my FS scores. I've found if there is even a small technical problem, the photo has almost no chance of breaking 6 unless it is appeals to emotion in an unusual way.
That being said, you don't have any overt technical problems with this photo that I can discern (am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, however). There are a couple of possibilities I can see that may have kept you from scoring higher. The first is DOF. Because the entire photo is in sharp focus, the eye is not necessarily drawn to the gator first thing. I think this would be technically quite a bit stronger if the rocks were not in focus. I see that your aperture was f/4.2 - if you can open your lens even further, you might want to try as wide as it will go in this type of situation for really shallow DOF. The other possibility is to use a fill flash in the foreground and underexpose by a couple of stops to produce a dark enough background that the rocks aren't really noticable.
The second possibility is that the mouth doesn't "pop" quite enough. The eye is always drawn to the either the brightest or darkest area of a photo initially - in this case, the scales where the alligator's foot meet his head. I would probably have dodged some of the brights around his eye and mouth just a tad, and definitely would have burned the lining in his mouth a little for more contrast in that area, then saturated his tongue a tad.
The final thing that would really enhance this photo is something over which you had almost no control - he matches his environment so well that he almost gets a little lost. A little selective increased saturation on just the two gators and decreased saturation on the ground area might have helped and still kept you within advanced editing limits.
This is still a very strong photo. As I mentioned, I think the composition and also the overall lighting are nice. This is one of those photos that with a couple of tweaks could definitely launch into another level. Hope this is at all helpful - please take all of this with a grain of salt - I am, after all, a card carrying member of Team Suck!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that a Hippo?? Wish I could help you but it's better than I could do already so...yeah, sorry! I will agree though that in a smaller challenge I feel this would have broke 6 by a nice margin. I'm swearing off of Free Studies until I have something I feel VERY good about...maybe next year...LOL. Cool shot though I like it.

I'm in chains now too. Didn't exactly turn out how I wanted, but no biggie, it was fun getting it.
I was so excited, up until this morning I had a 6+ for my contre-jour. It is in the 5's now in just a couple of hours. And here I have been for a couple of days thinking I was going to get my first 6. Hopefully a bunch of 1's will drop off at the end of voting :-) (always looking for that silver lining)
