hula hoops and such were fads, are fads and trends the same thing?

I would have to say that Trends and Fads are basically the same thing, except that Trend is a broder term incompassing a fad. I suppose a trend is anything 'popular'. The challenge was probably labelled this way to make it broad.

I've often wondered the same thing. |
This is sometime caused when people submit to the PREVIOUS challenge too late. They think they are submitting to one challenge, but it is entered into the next.

I think people often put too much stock into the precise wording of particularly challenges. These are usually thrown together in a couple of minutes... |

What about the pet rock from the 70's...is that considered a trend or just a fad?? I agree with the mullet idea, and the hula hoops.....this one is tough |

In my opinion, a fad is a passing event that last only a while. A trend is a fad that becomes something greater. I would have called body peircing a fad, but now it maybe a trent (tatoos included since they are fairly perminant). Leasure suites fit a fad well, in the Disco days. Beatle hair cuts were a fad in my high school days, long hair later became a trend and now is still in style/trend in certain age groups.
I think I will be using one of the other definitions, since I am so far away from the fads at my stage of life.

I got a possible entry for it but it isn't going to do any better than a 5. It isn't that moving it just fits the challenge. I bet you can make yours better than mine Kosta then I can at least win our side challenge of who can have the lower score. |

Hopefully for them at least, these people might have photos featuring a huge round afro. ;)

Wait a minute what about Building Trends??? am eager to know if it fits the challenge because it seems, people here are only talking with hair styles, mode/fashion, fads... I thought trend encompasses everything that changes like, hair style, building designs, modes, interior design for home, and techniques like mobile phones for communication and the a lot more... |

Interesting discussion. I view trends and fads as very similar. Fads are more things that people do or have or collect (toys, pokemon), while trends include these as well as fashion (bell bottoms, tie dye and peace signs, poodle skirts), architecture (styles like art deco or bauhaus), music (Beatles, disco), etc.
I hope folks are a bit open minded with this challenge. There have been LOTS of subtle trends over the years. In the early sixties, for example, Jackie Kennedy make 3/4 sleeves popular for a time. In the 1830s, the young Queen Victoria made certain clothes popular and trendy. In the early 2000s, it was trendy for Americans to hang flags and call anything French *Freedom.*
Good luck all! |
