Yep. That's why pros do real food ads. :)

Entries of food are good at meeting the challenge, but they still need good composition, good lighting, sharp focus, etc. Many of the shots lack those things.

Whereas mine has those things but totally misses the details section of the challenge. Heh. But maybe it'll crawl over 5 by the end.

mine meets the challenge but is terrible technically

Anyone see that food network challenge show (think it was that), where the pro photogs were taking 8 hours to get one shot of the perfect scoop of ice cream? The assistant would keep scooping out some, they would mess with it and then if it wasn't perfect it would go right in the trash. Pretty incredible attention to detail. The shot itself was nothing more than taking the already perfect scoop and sticking it in a softbox.

Oh yeah.. i also read in english class (that's right i'm still in high school) about how they would spray wD40 on burgers and glue on every poppy seed for the bun. It's insane

I'm surprised - ice cream is usually faked with things like mashed potato so that it doesn't melt so quickly :)

yeah. most food companies use cardboard or other materials to capture their product. I think cereal companies use glue instead of milk

Only if the advertisement is for something other than ice cream. Pancake syrup is sometines really motor oil, but not in a syrup ad. (Think IHOP for instance).

Fortunately, this was advanced editing. I used a lot of yellow and red in the color balance and painted portions of the food in layers, also added light filters. The goal was to get it to look as if you could just take a bite, but not look too artificial. My score is mediocre, so I guess it's not delicious enough - ;op

A popular ice cream substitute is chilled lard or shortening, it makes better scoops. There are a host of other food tricks such as placing marbles in the bottom of a bowl of soup to lift the noodles, meat, veggies and other ingredients to the surface so they show up. Or coloring strawberries (or other food) with makeup to get the right color. Kitchen Bouquet is a great way to "brown" meat without having to cook it all the way and risk burning part of it. KB is especially useful with poultry, which has such a pallid and unappetizing appearance in real life.

I found this article on styling tricks

particularly for the chicken and burger comments - about how they look much better if you don't actually cook them properly - that and the overuse of cardboard to plump up layers in a burger. Lovely.

i'm getting mercilessly hammered.

after voting i can't see why my shot isn't at least doing as well as the ones i gave 6 and 7.

it wouldn't be so humiliating if there weren't so few entries!

5.1

damn!

Cool! That could make your PB lineup if it stays there or moves up. :)

Typically average score for me, but I do like the two comments so far. That makes me a happy camper. I do always find it interesting that there are more views than votes.

I cannot believe I haven't seen the Taco Bell's "FOURTHMEAL" in the challenge, I was gonna do it, but I figured it would have been done...alot...darn.

I had to refrain from doing that. I work for a TB franchise office and I seriously considered doing tacos.

good amount of comments too. I wonder what the ribbons will score, probly around a 6.5 is my guess, this is gonna be a low scoring challenge for sure.
