Whoa, settle down we've all had one or two of these unhelpfull comments at one time or another, try not to take it to heart and focus on the comments that are helpful. Unfortunatley we can't stop these 'trolls' from trolling, they usually don't hang around too long.

I definitely agree with this option.
I tought that my latest submission to the current challenge (Tools) was sensibly better than the previous two.
However, it is performing mediocrely as the other two...
When discrepancy happen there are not many things you can think of.. the first is bad luck. The second are trolls..
I hope that DPC will be "troll-free" sooner or later, but I suppose that is gonna stay a dream more than a reality.
Let's admit it.. the whole world may well be ruled by trolls, so why should this be an island free of them?

Btw: I am in Italy these days so I will not be able to post as frequently as I did.
A quick hello then to all the friends here and congrats to Pitsaman for his ribbon!
I will be back online on semi-permanent basis in less than a couple of weeks.

In my case the past 6. I started out at 5.5 and went up to 6.5 and now down to 5.4!!!! I love this site keeping me in suspence!!!!! Sure you dont have to have a camera to have an eye for art... But this should be a site for Digital photographers only!!!! Let the people who submitted pictures vote against there challengers only!!(IMHO) Please forgive my spelling! The WEAZ

You've already taken the first step of recognizing a particular comment as unhelpful and useless. The next step is to ignore it, and not give the possible "troll" the satisfaction that he got to you - that's what keeps him coming back for more. The admins will take care of any abuse that affects scoring. You never know, it could be someone just learning to comment, still lacking tact. |

OK I'm much calmer now and your right it might be someone just learning. Often the harshest critics are the ones that know nothing or worse know just a little.
In the future before I react I'll think "How would David Or Marianne respond" and I'll have a classier way to handle this kind of thing ;)

I wouldnt post a "comment helpful" if it wasnt, but, what of those who dont post any comment helpfuls?
I really want to help if you'll except my lowly comments. but after looking I see some who never check that box.
My time is valuable I wish I could comment on every submission but I dont have time. those I do comment on I'd like to know if I was helpful!

Or maybe your own personal opinion is...say...biased?

Firstly, I am definitely sure that your English is way better than mine.
Having said that, I think that "biased" is quite a provoking term in that context.
My evalutation of the quality of my own photos may well be wrong, being influenced by personal factors. It is very difficult to judge ourselves objectively and, after all, such a skill would be immensely useful.
Exactly because of that, I did not say that my shot was wonderful nor I said that it deserved more in an absolute sense.
My statement was comparative with my two previous submission. I think it is pretty fair to compare our own photos among them and apply some qualitative analysis to learn a bit more about our mistakes.
I would have preferred to read a much longer statement from you possibly proving your point. To say "biased" without a proof sounds more like a kind of insult than anything else. In which case, I am sure you can do much better: try again! ;)

People who leave comments like 'pitiful', in my opinion, should be asked to leave the site. |

I always thought a troll was someone who voted photos very low and remained anonymous. So if someone leaves a comment they lose their anonymnity and thereby lose and their troll status. (If they ever were a troll in the first place) Correct me if I am wrong.

Same thing happened to me Joannadiva....except they said that the title of my picture was "stupid", and then they went on to give me a big lecture. I can't reveal much more without giving away my picture...I will when the challenge is over though!

Interesting website. The definition for troll had an also see for:
flame bait
An intentionally inflammatory posting in a newsgroup or discussion group, designed to elicit a strong reaction and to create a flame war.
The troll comment seems to have been effective. I do agree, though, that this type of person should be suspended or evicted from DPC.

Trolls love threads like this... This is without a doubt THE best way to give a troll their thrill and assure they will be around for a long time to come...
Best way to de-troll a website is to ignore them. They have the attention span of 4 year olds... If they don't get threads like these, praising them (and that's what they will consider this), they will slither away and crawl under some other rock.

lol thanks joanna, I wish I could say I was as cool-headed as David, but I'm glad no one's really noticed that I can be a real stinker.

The world is full of trolls and as long as you give them power over you, they will continue to demean you. If you can't be positively constructive, it is best not to say anything. Each and every entry is art from someone's heart and we are all striving to better our craft. I believe it is best to be civil and encourage our fellow photographers rather than trample their work. |

However by continuing this thread, you've kept their interest alive.
Oh dear, so have I.
