Is it "ok" to ask questions in here?

This was my Day 1 posted earlier.


This is the original (resized and desat only).


My question is, regarding B&W photography, how important is it to cover the complete wht/blk tonal range? True white to true black.

I'll offer an opinion based on what I've read. It is important for the sake of contrast, but the goal is to preserve as much detail as possible. So tools like brightness/contrast, curves, etc are too harsh when applied globally to the image. Masking with curves and dodging and burning are much more subtle. I also read repeatedly that masters of black and white photography are the true wizards of the dark room.
