This isn't the third reich, just pick a group and start posting. It doesn't really matter, I think the intent was to keep the sizes manageable for those who would like to comment on most/all images every day in their group.

Day 2
09/02/2007 02:02:28 PM · #234
Joe-

Since there are people still joining the groups, it might be easier for them, and the ones already on the groups, if there were links in the first posts to the other threads.

So, in the first post here, links to Groups A & B, and then in the Group post, a link to this post (and, if you want, the other Group).

Just makes it a little bit easier when trying to get to one of the other threads.

Just a thought :)

Also..........

Listed twice on Group B list:

rsolimeo - # 88 & 90 :)

Members on Group B that need added to list:

Rooster
wronp
dtremain
ATAPE
saurabhv
dainmcgowan
electrolost
ordinaryangel

Thanks a bunch, everything has been updated... Speaking of an update here are the links so someone doesn't have to scroll to the top or bottom of the list.

Hi. I'm over in Group B (30 Days of B&W - GROUP B) and have been posting images and commenting right along with many others.

This is my first 'Side Challenge' and I was expecting something a little different I think.

So far it's been fun, and everyone is making nice comments overall with some minor critiques about composition, etc...

During the course of this event I've grabbed a few shots that I probably would have missed and it's getting me out shooting everyday instead of mostly just on weekends.

However, with all of that being said, I don't know that I'm really learning much about B/W photography. What shots work/don't work for B/W treatment? Does B/W impart a particular "feel" to a photo that gets missed in color? What are the benefits (if any) to B/W photography? Grain/no grain? Etc, etc...

Should there be a side thread running with the 30 Day threads that discusses B/W photography in general without the daily photo postings?

Like I said, this is my first 'Side Challenge'. Is this the way all of the 'Side Challenges' work?

Sorry for rambling, and thanks for listening. Any feedback/thoughts on this from other participants?

Hey Barry,

To me, B&W photography is more about the play of shadows and light on a subject to make it more compelling or interesting to look at â or the use of textures, tones and contrast that enhance the image and focus on the subject. In color photography, you can do wonderful things with colors in landscapes or eyes to entice the viewer, but in B&W itâs the gradients of grays in a landscape, or shadows over a face that bring you into the picture. I think good B&W photographers actually âseeâ in B&W â in other words, itâs not about taking a picture and just converting to gray scale â good B&W photographers see an scene in B&W and then expose the image in a way to bring out the shadows and lights to create the picture they see in their mind - (this could be said of any good photographer, but as noted above, producing B&Wâs is about shadows, textures, gradients of light).

Just my off the cuff thoughts on the matter. :-)

Well, this is my second side challenge and I find them to be fun. It causes me to try to shoot more and comment more. I receive a lot of great comments which boosts my self esteem to try to experiment more. With the regular challenges I find my self esteem takes a big hit. I just keep plugging away. I guess what I am trying to say is that the side challenges is for a fun and learning environment that gives you the edge you need to try something you might not normally try under a friendly environment. Hopefully, along the way you learn something. But I do find that I favor B/W photos more because I think they have more detail and emotion. I guess that is why I have so far only participated in two B/W side challenges. Well that is my two cents. Thanks for listening. Oh yeah, what macpapas said I totally agree with.

My opinion is the same as macpapas. B/W gets little play on this site, so while I wish there was some master on board to enlighten us in the dark arts, I don't think that's the case. I do a lot of reading offline and on other sites and try and make the best of it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Much appreciated.

So it sounds like learning by participating in a 'Side Challenge' is primarily self-taught by experimenting with the given challenge topic, and by tidbits dropped along the way with comments such as what Mark ( macpapas) just posted.

Cool. I think I just acclimated. :)

I had a think about this and agree with the comments made so i thought about starting a side challenge side challenge.

B&W Side challenge / side challenge.

Cut & pasted
I thought it would be good to see how we all edited the same image and what the different outcomes would be so I have uploaded a large (2.42mb) unedited photo as your original to try your skills and see what the resulting images look like.

The thread with link to the photo and details are here.
Thread link here

I hope its ok to do this I think it will be interesting to see all the different styles and methods used on the same image.
