Heh, thanks for bumping this, Les. Was fun to read the responses made by people 3 years ago. Some of them have evolved wildly in that time. NicoBlu said he rarely carried his lol.
My camera is only with me when I'm awake. :)

One camera, SLR size, but just over a pound. Damn near everywhere, bloody nuisance, with bag and extra card and battery. In one case, I don't take it: when I go for a walk because I need to walk, and not to spend time framing this or that, squatting, kneeling, lying on my front or back, being my usual damn fool self. Oh yes, also not when I go outside to garden, cause I'll be really dirty and prolly whang the camera with a shovel or step on it, and that's when the hummingbirds and low flying geese come. |

Stupid question, but how will a cooler help protect from the heat? It has no source of cool air on its own unless you place something in there to cool the air like Blue Ice or the like. But if you do that, then you run the chance of condensation on your equipment. Can someone help me with this idea? |
Such an old question, but anyway. The cooler box is insulated. That's why it keeps cold with an ice block in it. With out an ice block, it still doesn't heat up as fast as the rest of the air in the car.

Always.
Part of the reason I have the camera I do is because of the way it fits in my hand.
Not only do I have it with me all the time, but most of the time it's in my hand.
I may have a gnarled hand like a gorilla, but my D70s fits it PERFECTLY!!!!
I can work both aperture and shutter wheels one-handed.
Gawd I love my Nikon!!!!!

This is correct. The cooler box will not keep anything cooler than the ambient air temperature without ice, but it WILL make a dramatic difference in a closed/locked vehicle, where temps can climb well over 175 degrees or so in the summer. When we were working architectural photography jobs out of the van, we kept loaded film holders AND all gear in insulated chests. This was absolutely essential.

While I'm alive... even in my sleep it's not far away.
usually I'll take one body and a lens, dictated by my mood.
however, if I'm going shooting I will take 2 bodies, the 70-200, the 12-24, the 50mm, sometimes the 35-70 or a flash or two, most of the time my tripod, a filter collection my remotes, spare batteries, a blower, lens cleaning kit and most importantly MUSIC!

You know when you get that new camera you've been eyeing, you'll fall asleep with it in one hand and the manual in the other. ;-)

I take my camera when there's going to be something worth shooting.
So far I haven't been wrong.
I haven't taken a picture worth shooting when I didn't have my camera with me.

When I just had the Pentax 33L I carried it everywhere. When I bought bigger heavier cameras I stopped. I miss having a camera with me all the time but the AA rechargeables don't hold a charge very long so I'm often left flat.
Now that I'm thinking about it I'll try again |

Almost always.
One of the few times I left it behind to run an errand I walked out of the store and watched a Peregrine Falcon take a white dove right in front of me. She had to make three passes to get it out of a window alcove and then took it to the ground within 20 feet of me to make the kill. I would of had plenty of time to get my camera even if I had left it in the car.
But with that said I still find myself leaving it behind at times because of the weight and size issue. I'm in the process now of buying a new Canon A650 to carry at all times.

sorry for the thread drift here, but I have a lovely Pelican case that I bought for taking my camera in the kayak (I tend to end up in the water while getting in and out of it!). I am now thinking that it might offer great heat protection and cold protection.
Does anyone use a pelican case for this? |

With the style that I like to shoot, good image opportunities only happen one time.
Anytime I have pants on, the Fuji S3 is nearby. In my work truck I carry one body, 10 lenses, a good flash, and accessories, and one tripod, one monopod. The top 5 images in my DPC portfolio were shot on the way home from work, or while at work.
I live in Florida, and don't worry too much about the heat, although I have seen the thrmometer over the sun visor read 155 F after being parked in the sun for a while. I put something over the bag if I think that direct sun will be on it, or if I am going to be away from the truck for a while.
I keep all except the pods in a Canon bag, so no one will think it is worth stealing. : )
It does have the flashy metal label pulled off so that it looks like an ordinary school backpack.

I take my camera with me (almost) always anymore... I've discovered that when I don't have it with me, I stumble upon something that I want to photograph, so I've gotten into the habit of taking it with me everywhere. It's almost a natural extension of my arms these days - and I LOVE it!
I've never felt more "alive and fulfilled" than when I'm out shooting - and I can't believe I went 40 years without realizing that about myself.
PS: The only thing that is comparable to that feeling is editing the shots I've taken... Sometimes, I think I enjoy that even more. :-)

Always... Mine is in my car most of the time but I do take it with me in the winter to prevent freezing. You just never know when that 6+ photo is going to happen

Somewhere between "Sometimes" and "Only when I'm after a picture."
I can't bring a camera onto the property at work, so I can't just keep it in my car all the time (wouldn't want to anyway because of the temperature extremes and possibility of theft) so definitely not "Always" or even "Most of the time."
I'll take it anytime I think there is a reason to take it, i.e. family outings, interesting places, or when I am specifically going out in search of photographs. |

Always have the P&S with me. The SLR only when I expect to shoot something.

Everyday I have my camera with me and I usually take my pictures early in the morning. Before going into the office I usually walk around my job and take photos, the streets are kind of empty and you can get nice street shots.

I still use my DSLR quite a bit, but when traveling on business, or carrying around everyday, I take my G7. |

Like many others I take my camera and put it in the car before the kids.. ;-) Not quite...but yes it goes with me everywhere. As I'm sure with many others if you take your camera with you there is a pretty good chance you will only see a couple of mildly interesting subjects. However, if you want that prize winning photo leave your camera at home and it is guaranteed that the subject will present its self.
Someone asked previously about temperature extremes in the car. I have found a Lowepro backpack that has a pretty decent amount of insulation. I have left it in the truck a few times during this last summer and the camera never got hot to the touch when I took it out. It seems to stay pretty moderate but I still try not to leave it in the truck during the middle of summer or the depth of winter. |
