I mean,i have a website that contacted me here in Quebec, and they say my contract would be exclusive to them.
I can show my photos everywhere, but cant sell them to anyone else for 2 years.
wouldnt that limit my options in terms of selling my pics ?
so my question is do most of the known stock websites allow you to sell everywhere else ?
Thanks.

Most are non-exclusive, though a few offer the option to become exclusive, usually for higher payments. Are you looking at submitting to "micro-stock" or "macro-stock" sites -- that would make a difference.
It also makes a difference if you are into a lot of accounting -- keeping track of which images have been submitted to/approved by which sites is a royal pain, and sometimes you have to keyword them by hand on the site. If you can set all that stuff up in a database or accounting program before you start it will be a lot simpler later on. I've heard from a couple of people that they've gone exclusive just because they don't want to deal with multiple sites. |

Often macro sites want exclusive rights to an image, but you can still usually sell other images at other places - sometimes they want exclusive right to all your stock images.
If they are requesting exclusive rights they should have a proven sales record and give you a fair amount of the sale price.

I am not too fond of exclusive agreements. Most of the time it simply boils down to reaching a (much) lower number of customers. Of course, it saves you the trouble of uploading on severeal sites, but if that is too much trouble, why would you engage in stock photography in the first place?

Currently I am on 5 micros and one macro (different images there, of course) and that works out well for me. I have a couple of images exclusively on fotolia and dreamstime, but as long as the number of my images online has less than 4 figures, I can manage the tracking with a simple spreadsheet and won't go completely exclusive for one agency. |

yeah,
my first thought is of course that i limit my sales of the images.
however, they're offering 55 percent share of the sale.
plus it is sort of a niche. Its very localized, they look for pics specifically from Quebec,so that might be a big plus.
I wrote to them and asked them a bunch of questions,i can imagine they are running around to get the proper answers back to me now..
Its a relatively new company, they have been registered for only a year or so.
also i read that if i have a small bunch of images (maybe 200 )i would be better off taking the RM contract than an RF contract because RF is better when you have a very large volume of pics.
although i see some people having a bit of both..
This is all very Linda Blair headspin territory. |

yeah, it is always a bit of a toss up. With new companies you could be sitting for quite a while waiting for a sale, but on the other hand you could get lucky. 55% is good, but not outrageously good, but probably about all you can expect to get.
I hope they do not require total exclusivity? Or, I mean - I hope that you can still submit other RM or RF images to other sites?

well things are looking up..
That Quebec stock business has decided to not go exclusive, they told me how they went around, talked to photographers and found out it wasnt a good idea.
WOOHOO!!
So,my next dilemna is..
Im working in elements 3
Is putting tags the same as putting keywords? i think it is right?
but my big problem is..
I need to do a copy of my stock folder with french keywords..and another with english keywords..or does it matter if i have keywords in both languages ?
Man,now THATS keywording work for you.
But im still very happy because i was planning to do a book or portfolio with Lulu.com and to have my first exhibit in the spring,so im pretty happy with that company's decision.
