My very very generous Dad is giving me money toward a D300 ...
Well, He says I HAVE to buy a camera with the money and the D300 is my choice.
ANYway ... the question is ... Do I hang on to my d70 or do I sell it and use it toward the D300 and extra stuff?
I'm not a working professional photographer but I do use photos in my work and I plan on shooting bands and stuff every once in a while - so would it be better to have 2 bodies - one superior to the other ???
Or save some money toward the new one or extras?? !!!
Just looking for opinions! Thanks. |

IMO, I'd sell the D70 and use that money for glass (lens). You can never have too many lenses. Unless for some reason you need the D70 for any sort of backup purposes. |

Keep it and use it for infrared ;) |

To me that answers your question. If you aren't in a position where not having a backup could land you in court, there is no real compelling reason to own a second body.
The D70 will sit on a shelf, collecting dust and depreciating in value, as you play with your new toy. It could have a new life in the hands of some n00b. I say sell it and put the cash toward glass, flashes, or what-have-you.
On second thought, it could be used if you want to go into a mosh pit or something or just somewhere you don't want to take your new camera.
Either way, congrats on the forth-coming goodies :-D

youd only get a couple hundred bucks for the d70, id keep it.
plus, when youre at an event, if you have two cameras you look way cooler. |

I just got my D300 and I'm keeping my D70. I may have situations when I need 2 bodies. Like option said, you can't get much for it anyway.

I'm in the same boat, although it's a much clearer answer for me. I've added the D300 to the family, but I'll keep the D70s, and my D100. I feel much better knowing I have highly-capable backups in place if necessary.
If you anticipate doing ANY paid work, I'd hold onto the D70. |

I'm in the exact same boat. I'm not going to sell mine, but I'm debating whether to keep it as a backup or convert it to infrared. Right now, I'm not getting enough professional work that a backup is strictly necessary, but I'm guessing I will need a backup within the next year. But I don't know that I want my backup to be a partially functional D70.
Maybe I just answered my own question. |

Wow, it sounds like the last of the D70 "old guard" is finally upgrading... |

Why would one land in court for not having a second body?
Also, I'm curious what one would use two bodies for. To me it seems simple; upgrade the body and get more lenses. |

You'd shoot a wedding or other paid event without a backup...? |

If you shoot weddings, or bah mitzvahs (sp?) or any sort of non-repeatable (or expensive to repeat) events, taking only one camera is like walking in with a noose around your neck.

One body at a wedding ... that would be NUTZ ... always have the 2nd body with me (actually had to switch once due to a battery problem with the D2X) |

Someone pays you $2000+ to photograph the most important day of their life.
Your camera breaks.
You:
"Sorry guys, heres your money back! Were cool, right?"
Them:
"Wheres my pictures?"
You:
"Yeah, about that... Theres 6, of your uncle joey doing shots with the bridesmaids..."
Them:
"I'LL F*&(#@!$ KILL YOU!!"

I just did with my D50.....it was a success...but I tried using it as a ploy for a D300....'geez, I really needed a backup or a second body to hold another lens.." I don't think my begging worked, because I REALLY don't want to shoot another wedding!
Alan, how's the D300? |

I'd keep the D70 as a backup. If I'm out shooting and need to change lenses fast, I'll mount one on the D70 and another on the D200 and just alternate them. Yeah, I'm kinda lazy, but its nice when I'm in a dusty/dirty environment.

Very cool -- I'm looking forward to trying it on something practical... I have a LOT of pictures of my kitchen right now :) File sizes sure are a LOT bigger than with the D70s! |

I'm kicking myself in the arse right now for selling the two I had. I switched over to Canon and had a D70 and a D70s. I wish I had kept them both. My son is now into photography. He's only 8 and really liking to hang with dad. I say keep it. You never know. |

one more reason for keep it (not as big a reason as some of the others but...) - it's got an electronic shutter and you can easily use at speeds above 1/500 second which is really handy for some things, wack an older style flash on top and the camera doesn't know its there but it will still fire. I'm pretty sure you can't use the D300 for high speed flash photography in the middle of the day, at f2.8 and 1/4000 of a second - but the D70 can!!!

I'ld keep the camera as well. Unless you are really hurting for money, the amount you will get for it will be little compared to how useful it can be. Haveing two cameras, one w/ wide and one with tele or macro, makes things much easier than swithching lenses all the time. As an added bonus, you could use it for IR, if you ever get into that sort of thing. Congrats on the new camera and good luck! |

A proposal I like a lot is for you to send me the D300 and I send you my D70. That way, you don't have to learn how to use all the extra features and functions. PM me and I will send you my address where the new camera can be sent...

So, how'd you get Tanya to go for that one?

It is back and better than ever - at least I hope so. After the swim in the pacific and the bounce on the concrete, my D70 is like brand new. In fact, I think I have had all the parts replaced in the past 6 months with my stupidity...
