I can't believe this shot did not do much better: It was over 6, but man, tack sharp and beautiful.

Out of curiosity, how exactly can one "think outside the box" in a Free Study? :-)

You can write dnmc on every single entry if it's April 1, but I don't recommend it.
In some sort of seriousness, I would say that DPC is a genre and so, to some extent, is Free Study. I think there's quite lot of recognition of contextual aesthetics, which pan out as something approaching rules. Put another way, just about everyone has some idea of what kind of picture runs away with the accolade hereabouts. As a counterweight to that little cynicism, though, I think the local collective perception is ever so gently widening out, as a result of people entering pictures that don't look like obvious ribbon ringers. Evolution assumes the potential to mutate. |

I was, of course, being humorous :-) Taking a lateral approach to the challenge topic is only one form of OOBIEness. Other forms might, for example, be technical (as in using some stranger processing technique, or using the camera in an unusual way), or aesthetic (as in ignoring/flaunting conventional compositional "rules"), to name just a few...

yes, it's a Free Study entry, but it really asks the viewer to stop, look, and think. |

Oh, yes, I do wish to nominate that for an OOBIE, please. Or second it. Whichever. |

WAY down at the bottom (373rd place) is a fine OOBIE nomination-worthy image:
Breaks all the "rules", and brings an absolute stench of emptiness and despair in so doing. The title is a great ironic counterfoil to this unflinching look at blight of urban modernity.

Bingo. I looked at my personal top 10 votes and pulled out the ones I think defy typical DPC high-scoring shots. I voted highly for typical high-scoring shots, too, but my nominations are the ones I don't think fit that mold.

I nominate Kashi's self-portrait for an OOBIE. Totally different than the rest of the challenge entries.

All OOBIE nominations posted between December 9-15 will go to the vote starting December 16. Looks like there's only one OOBIE nom so far for this week.
There's about two days left to go until voting begins - anyone find any more OOBIE-worthy shots in recent challenges?

And to think, I was seriously contemplating a self-DQ on that image
