I was wearing a coat but no gloves or hat and no tripod, the camera was a wee bit cold after 2 shots, I took 11 shots only the last 3 were in focus after I decided to lean against the very very cold car. I was outside for about 15 minutes. Thats all I could stand.
I am starting to think that Kirbic will not even take his camera out of the bag unless breakfast is somehow involved. haha

Thanks for the comments on my eclipse picture. I'm very pleased with the way my Canon 40D performed with the Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens. This was the first time I used the Live View feature and it made the process so much easier. I looked at a few moon calculator's to get a general idea of the setting I needed and took the picture in full manual mode including focusing. But I did do something incorrectly, In the Live View mode I should of turned the IS OFF. I believe it would of improved the picture as I have read that IS should be off while using the LV feature. But I'm still pleased with some of the photo's I took and thank everyone for your comments.

My pictures of the eclipse yesterday. Too lazy to mount the tripod. Too poor to buy a better lens.

Actually kind of weird stationary stars - but I made lots of wishes anyway! |

Originally posted by Bugzeye: well one of the reasons is camera shake. other is your exposure time was a tad long. If you were not using a tripod I would say you did a pretty good job.
one other thing I know can cause that is fog on your lens or if you were shooting through a window or other glass that could have gotten steamed up
after looking at it again I would rule out camera shake, because the halo's are nice and round.

Why in the second shot do the star/planets show up like big gas blobs and in different colors? For the record, I took these shots with my Fujifilm S9000. These are straight from the camera except for resize for web. | |
Yup, that's a foggy lens. I had that problem for the Aug 07 eclipse, totally bummed me out. One way to combat it is to remove the lens cap ONLY for the exposures.

Since my only tele lens is a Tokina MF (bitch to focus) and rather lackluster on digi I went with a wider angle for my eclipse photo to add an element of interest. Also because so many others have captured the solitary eclipsed moon far better than I.

Took a little creative license as to location and size but the moon did rise and eclipse close to this shot. It came up in a very uninteresting place right between this refinery and Mt. Baker to the north. These were both taken within minutes at about half eclipse. Not much editing other than convert from RAW to b/w, crop, resize and sharpen.
The bad news - my Nikon 80-400 VR bit the dust. On walking out of the location I was shooting I slipped on the rocks and fell (yeah, ouch). The lens hood struck straight onto a rock and jammed the lens into the mount. The zoom and focus no longer work and I can see where the lower lens body jammed into the upper. Glass looks fine. The D200 came through unscathed, it is pretty tough as that is the second time I dropped it. Sent the lens off to Nikon this morning. We'll see.

re the bad news; I hope that it is just jammed, and not broken inside. In any case, I hope that it is repairable. I have one of the new little LED headlights that they sell everywhere now, and it has already saved me from something similar a couple of times when moving around at night.

Captured Eclipse. Shot with a 15mm Fisheye Nikkor and flash. Cropped a bunch. I guessed everything and shot a bracket because I could not see the scene when I shot it.
And, a couple more with the other camera and an old 180, 2.8, ED Ai Nikkor. The last one is cropped quite a bit, to about 1/10th of the whole image.

Great shots!
I was pretty disappointed with my results. I'm thinking I might need to get my eyes checked.
I had a real problem with focus. Tried auto and manual. Also tried my Sigma 500 and my 1.4 extender with my 70-200. :(
[thumb]649748[/thumb]
Edit: I used a tripod and a remote cable but had the best results when I used the self-timer. I think it was just too cold for this old"er" gal.

Here's another.
[thumb]649756[/thumb]
Which one is the planet Saturn? and which one is Regulus? If you can make them out. No edit. I can see them on my monitor, though. |

I believe Saturn is below and to the East of the Moon -- I tried to take a shot of it, and blown up it looks like you can barely make out the rings. |

lol, I suppose you are referring to my profile. Yes I have four cameras but the 350D is IR only and the G9 is really my wifes camera for the diaper bag as it is much easier to carry around with the baby than a DSLR. So in reality I have two regular cameras. But I don't mind splurging. |
