I'm relatively easy to spot because I'm often confused with a bike courier.... green jacket (optional high viz), leggings, boots, balding guy, glasses, tripod and bag....
Will be there for 10...albeit a big foggy and tired :)

Woo, this should be fun!
Talj, how are you making the name tags? If it's something that takes time and expense, I don't know that it's fair to ask you to do one for Pete and I given that we're not yet 100% that we are attending.
Anyways, Pete's username here on DPC is Ganders. He doesn't mind people calling him that as it was pretty common during our university years (a long time ago) but none of our friends really call him that anymore, it's usually just "Pete" now.
Most of my friends do call me Kavey, on the otherhand, though if you'd rather put usernames and realnames, that's fine too, my real name is Kavita.
I don't mind doing my own name tag if you prefer, I have one of those conference clear holders with pin on back for which I can print my own little card. Haven't got two so can't do Pete's.
:)

Hey Kavita :o) I'll happily do a tag for both you and Pete, it's no trouble at all :o) |

Well, guess what? I just came as close to as I've ever got to being arrested for photography. Very bolshy policeman outside a national monument (don't want to give location away because it's a challenge entry) took exception to my 100-400 lens again. Forget the fact that there were literally hundreds of tourists everywhere with cameras...
He asked me who I worked for, I told him I was an amateur, he then told me I needed permission! I argued that they weren't stopping anyone else shooting, so why me? He said it was the lens - too big. I offered to show him that I couldn't see in windows or get anywhere close, but he didn't care. I had to move on or be arrested - his words.
I don't know what experiences you guys are having but this is my 3rd stop in I think two weeks at different locations. The first was the stop and search at Hyde Park Corner, the second was the helicopter and WPC sent to me in Gladstone Park and the third was today in Central London. I'm now starting to get really irritated by it...whereas before it was an inconvenience and a sad fact of post 911 life, but now it seems like we live in a police state where common sense has gone out of the window.
Couple this with the fact you can't even shoot your own family at school plays/events, being a photographer anywhere but home is starting to suck bigtime....(and if I was any good at indoor/studio shots it wouldn't be a problem)
Gah!
Rant over :)

Andi and I had a similar incident at Canary Wharf a while back.
Being the one with the most time on my hands I tend to contact any places we are going to photograph in advance and check their 'rules and regulations' as well as whether or not we need some sort of written permission or pass...though in your case I can see that would be extremely difficult considering it seems to have been in a 'public' area.
It's a sad affair when someone is singled out because they have paid for quality lenses!
Maybe I should bring my point and shoot to the GTG too, incase anyone gets accosted by an over enthusiastic police officer/security guard ;o) |

Oh, is it going to be interesting when there is not just one photographer with a nice pretty lens, but a whole thundering herd of them!! Perhaps we should send a note to the local police in advance so they can have plenty of transportation ready to haul us all in! |

Wouldn't be the first time the police would stop for us lot. They thought we were stalking the royal family at GTG9 last year. |

A 'herd ' of photographers. . . hmmm
I wonder what the collective name for a group of photogs is ? I can think of a few ;- ) |

Maybe melethia meant a 'nerd' of photographers :- ) |

'nerd' would work. As, I suppose, would "gaggle". It'll be interesting. I've not been arrested recently that I know of, and pretty sure never in the UK. |

The collective term for a group of photographers has to either be either an exposure, or a goldmine ;)

A canon of photographers? Or is that too elitist :p |

. . . a short interruption about the nametags . . .
. . . one of the first things I learned about traveling to a city to attend an event like a conference or meeting (which I had to do a lot in my former life) was: take off your name tag when you go outside. According to police/safety folks, it's a great big sign saying, "I'm probably from out of town, I'm doing something different and special with a bunch of other folks who are also doing something different and special (and most of whom are probably also from out of town), and I'm not really paying attention to my surroundings." Legend on the conference circuit includes a story about someone who was robbed, and the robber used his name whilst robbing him. I can't think of a replacement for them, though, that allows us to call each other something other than "hey you, yeah you, with those cheesy Canon lenses, stand still laddie!!"
Maybe it would help if we all learned how not to be seen . . .
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program . . .

Obviously the only way to `fit in` with all those genuine Londoners is to dress up in this traditional & authentic London costume.. seriously, they ALL wear these in London.

This made me chuckle! :o) I'm pretty certain that every person with a big white lens and even some with slightly smaller but still expensive lenses will by more alert than usual in the 'big city'! Though I do understand your point Brucey ;o)
How about I try to make up a code name for the tags for you Norfolk boys...got a few ideas for Andi's but I'm assuming you'd prefer something less derogatory? ;o)
And Simms, I know it's been a little while since the last GTG but it looks like that little crash you had turned your hair white overnight ;o) |

That's not the only white things we Essex boys wear, you know. Don't forget the white shell-suits.
