I think that's the real message of my painting with light shot. Painfully literal is the way to go for good scores around here. Same with an EP. Certainly the standard person staring at the camera in a telling environment style of magazine/ editorial shot is the way to go to score well. That would be classic, literal, right smack in the middle of any sort of definition environmental portraiture.

It just isn't the only way to go.

That's the way I went, and it isn't working for me, lol...

Arrrgghh! Open your minds, voters, to what a portrait can actually be.

No comments yet, but I think that my score is lower because many people will think "That's a ______ shot, not a portrait." Sadly, only after the challenge is over will I be able to enlighten them to the fact that I was hired to produce this exact portrait.

Just because you were hired doesn't make it a portrait.

I have noticed a lot of the photos don't show the person's face or the person is the distance in profile. In my mind neither of these are portraits.

I just looked up the definition of portrait and every one mentions showing the face.

"portrait shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer"

" likeness of a person, especially one showing the face, that is created by a painter or photographer"

So I'm using that to judge whether the photo DNMC.

Cool. Mine does, in fact, show the face (it's just that there is a very out of the box element involved also). I also believe that it is an important part of what makes a portrait and it would be a rare portrait of a person that didn't show the face.

Luckily my fears have not come true and voters seem to accept my shot as portrait enough although the comments clearly indicate that they recognize it as "a ________ shot" also.

mine shows the face but I am getting very mixed reviews on perspective. Some LOVE the perspective, others hate it. I think it's interesting so I'll keep it. I'm going to just keep shooting and one day my photo will be on the front page. For now, I'm not going to sweat it. I'll shoot what I like and at some point I'll happen upon a DP friendly entry for myself.

I do vote from my heart and from how well the photo is technically. Even if a photo doesn't strictly follow the definition I may still vote it high. But I do use the definition as a general guideline.

They say it DNMC :( I thought the idea was to capture something in an environmental setting. I didnt know it had to show a persons face. Oh well.

I finally got two comments. Both were nice and one was very complimentary and boasts they gave me a 10. My day is made. Despite this I am dropping ever so slowly but steadily. Which I suppose means that most are not finding it as enchanting. I honestly just want to keep it above a 5. I've got my fingers crossed. There are still alot of days to vote.

just in the short time it took to post my last post (two posts up) it is down to
5.3696. steadily and surely downward. I should be at 4 by the end of voting if this keeps up.

Do I get some kind of award if this is my second challenge in a row to get a straight "5" score??
03/20/2008 10:46:09 AM · #97
I have not entered a contest in almost two years, to be back regardless of how well I am doing is a great sensation. I have recieved comments, that remind me of what I so loved about this site, the people! My picture, I have to admit, not doing so well but I am okay with that, I turned my passion in to a job, that took the fun from it. I am back to have fun!

I checked when I logged in and I had received a 6.2xx. ONE vote later 6.16. One vote of one. Damn trolls. I am still hoping to end at a 6.2 though.
