Last year for the first time I traveled with 10 other dental students and one of our faculty doctors to Belize to perform dentistry in a remote village (last year's thread with photos). Well, it is getting close to the time for this year's trip and I am extremely excited again! This year, I am armed with a D200 and 20 gigs of memory cards, so I am getting ready for a photo frenzy.
I have also thrown together a website for informational/fundraising purposes which I wanted to share with everyone. If you have any comments/suggestions on the site, I would appreciate it.

I just looked through your website, which is really good. Awesome photos and what a cool project. I bet it's quite life changing to go there and help so many people. I'll be interested to see your photos when you get back.
Bon Voyage! |

It really is a great experience that I hope I can have every year for many years. I will definitely be posting the photos here when I get back.

I was just there in January. It was wonderful. My favorite was the Belize Zoo.
Link to photos (combined with several from the visit to its neighbor, Guatemala).

Okay, so I finally have a chance to post the photos from this year's trip. This year was much more hectic. Because of a series of flight cancellation/delays(causing us to miss connecting flights) our original group was split up into what finally ended up being 7 groups. Some people drove from Louisville to Cincinnati to catch a flight, others drove from Louisville to Chicago, and another group took a taxi ride from Louisville to Nashville. Eventually everyone made it to Belize, however 24 of our bags were not so lucky. 12 of those bags were personal items and 12 were equipment bags. Eventually the bags did come and we were able to set up the dental clinic. Well, almost. Some of the larger supplies and equipment were stored in a different village over the past year. Well, someone broke in and stole 3 of our dental chairs and some various surgical instruments lathe chucks (who knows what they will do with those). Needless to say this year we have found a new place to store our equipment. Despite the rocky start, things ended up running rather smoothly, and we got to see quite a few patients in the time we had. Interestingly enough, there was less of a need this year for extractions and more need for simple (relatively speaking) fillings. We also gave out over 2000 toothbrushes and I'm not sure how many hundreds of tubes of toothpaste. Unfortunately, because of the stolen equipment, we were not able to make any false teeth.
Now here are the photos:
And the "snapshots":

They are awesome photos.
I commend you and your fellow dental students on the humanitarian work. |
