I was saving a photo on photoshop and was wondering can I the web display 16 bit images or do I have to leave it in 8 bit for viewing on the web?

I'd change it to 8. You're going to lose a lot of quality online and 16 bit just makes the file size larger anyays. You won't notice the difference.

there are very few monitors that do greater than 8 bit /channel -
popular web formats tend to be 8 bit

I not bother it and leave it in 8 bit... I am trying to find the best way to save high quality images for viewing on the web!!

basically 16 bits are made to give you a sharp contrast and a uniform gradient! i wouls prefer you to compress the image in jpeg format in 8 bits coz its gonna eat up lot of space in 16 bit....its great to work on 16 bit bit but for editing you need high end computers coz photoshop keeps on hanging while working on 16 bit format. so jst upload your files in 8 bit only...!

I would edit and save in 16 bit and use the "save for web" option which converts to 8 bit automatically. If you ever want to do further editing and/or make a print, you still have the 16 bit version.
