While we were in Hawaii, we took a boat trip to where Kilauea's lava was entering the ocean. It was an amazing trip!

My rural landscape entry was one result:

I also took some video clips using my point-and-shoot camera, and I put the compilation on YouTube.

I grew up on the big island. I don't know if you got a chance, but you can hike out there, and if you do it in the off hours (3 am) you can hike up to the pali (cliff) and watch it flow down the mountain in the dark. very surreal. Unfortunately, I never had a DSLR anytime that I hiked out there.

Oh, boy, did we ever! I even brought a recording back for a Puerto Rican friend here who doesn't quite understand why the Hawaiians want to eradicate the little frog.

Awesome photos. I visited those exact islands back in 2003 and I am ready to go back. Hopefully by the time I do I will have upgraded my DSLR to an Olympus E3 or a Nikon D300. Can't make up my mind. We did not get to see any actual lava flowing but we did visit the park. Thanks for sharing. They are beautiful.

Oh, one more thing: if you ever wondered whether image stablization is worth it: YES!

We were on a rocking boat and I was shooting at 200mm at 1/125s at dusk. :) FWIW, I chose a somewhat narrower aperture of 6.7 so the focus wouldn't be as critical in terms of DOF.
