How is the lighting in this photo?

Looks like the sunlight is coming from behind the subject. You have done a wonderful job of showing their front side and faces. Great smiles.

The foreground tones appear pretty flat to me ... I don't know if there's more to be recovered there. It is well-lit so their features/expressions are easily seen, but I'd try for just a little more foreground contrast myself.

I would try a reflector to shed some light on their faces from one side or the other to give the faces some depth and highlights. The faces are a flat pasty gray. A fill flash might help but I think a reflector would work best.

Nice capture of emotions, very natural indeed. The sunlight in the kids' hair brings out each strand almost separately. That one strand of hair at the front of the girl's head is a little distracting though. The faces could be a little lighter too. Did you use Neat Image on this? The boy's face looks a bit over-smooth.

This is a wonderful image. I really like the expressions on the kids faces. I would really like to see this in color. The lighting looks good.

edited to say I added 21% more contrast and 14% more brightness to your picture and it put some depth into the kids face. Might want to try that just to see what you think.

I actually don't see much of a difference. What program are you using? I used Pictureit. Don't be afraid to use more contrast. I tends to make the pictures strong points stand out.
