The Salt Flats are about an hour and a half drive from Salt Lake. It doesn't feel too long going out (excitement and all) ... but I swear it feels like forever coming home. Timing will be important. What time do we want to be there to shoot, how late do we want to shoot, etc?

I should be able to attend on the 27th! I may bring one or two friends. I have a sister (age 17) who might be willing to model if people are interested.

@ Alecia:

Like David said, about an hour and a half if you go the speed limit. ;)

@David:

We left SLC at 3PM yesterday and had plenty of time to shoot on the flats, in Wendover and made it back home by 9:30 PM. That was using EVERY ounce of available sunlight before heading home. My sister has also volunteered to model for us and I'm sure I can dig up some others if needed / wanted.

@Skylercall:

If your sis is willing for sure bring her along.

At All:

We should figure out a carpool solution before the last minute. That way we're not wasting a ton of gas going out. I have a Sequoia that fits seven and some gear if people are willing to chip in on gas we can take that.

I have a mini-van that will also seat seven if anyone is interested.

WHA!! I'm glad I hopped on and saw this. I'm totally down for this. I'm currently unemployed (still searching), so as of right now pretty much any date works. I was bummed I couldn't make the Red Rock GTG, so this would be awesome. As far as carpool goes, I have a civic that could 'comfortably' seat 3 more if we have a Westminster/Sugarhouse group. Splitting gas would be cheap. Otherwise I'm happy to let others drive too.

Guys, looks like we are getting a nice group going. We have some questions to answer still:

1. Where do we meet to carpool and go?
2. What time? (keep in mind that the drive is 1.5 hours from SLC)
3. How late are we staying? (Probably pretty late if we want to catch the sunset)
4. Looks like we'll have models....how about props? (a chair maybe? long fabric?)

This should be fun.

I'm coming from West Jordan and could round up people from the south end of the valley. I saw a picture someone did once of his wife out on the Salt Flats ironing clothes. It made it kind of interesting being out in the middle of nowhere... but yeah, a chair, something unique, something "out of place".

And everything is so white there ... so either something white to go with it ... or completely not white, like maybe a bright red to totally steal your attention.

That's exactly what I was thinking! I wanted to take a bright red chair...just gotta find one. :)

I thought of silk for a shot like (except not nude): //www.mediamagnet.com/images/catalog/comps/d/dcbc6a87-9324-4649-82b3-77a7be85bc4c.jpg

I have some random pilot stuff that might make interesting props (headset, charts, etc). And I spoke with a friend of mine from SLCC, and she'd be interested in joining us as well (as a photog).

For carpools I was thinking we could organize local cars and have the cars meet up at a central point to head off for the salt flats. Would that be a good way to do it? If so, I'll be happy to be the Sugarhouse/near sugarhouse driver. A central point for meeting might be the exit off of I-80 just past the airport. Or maybe closer to the city if people needed to get gas (or make an emergency Pictureline stop).

Meeting at Pictureline would be totally cool ... 'cept I think they close at 2pm on Saturdays. (why do they do that?!?)

Check out these images on iStock taken at the Salt Flats. Perhaps some inspiration there...

Or these cars (my daughter and her husband) taken at dusk out at the Salt Flats.

Flats

Brilliant work IMO..

I'd love to ride with someone and help pay for gas. My night vision is terrible so I'm not comfortable driving people home.

Yeah, that's the one! I knew I remembered a lady and an ironing board.

Well I'm in Draper, I can pick up anyone coming from over point of the mountain easy enough and I'm right off of the freeway so easy on and off when going home. I like the idea of meeting at Picture line but I wouldn't be to thrilled about parking my car right there after dark.

Nald,

I live in Eagle Mountain, I can meet you at Kohl's in Draper or Ikea. I may be bringing another photographer with me, how many people can you take?
09/10/2008 11:25:55 AM · #67
I'll be attending. I live in WVC, just off of I-215 at 4100 S.

I'd love to car pool.

Have we decided on a time?
09/10/2008 11:53:30 AM · #69
The time mentioned up above was 3pm.

Sure, I can fit at most 7 with some gear. Kohl's is easy on and off the interstate let's meet there.

I'm coming from Saratoga Springs and I'd like to car pool as well. Can I meet you at Kohl's as well Steve? I'll not only pitch on gas but I'll bring treats as well. :)
