How about heading to the police station and asking if you can do the rounds with them one day???

Ha ha, I know. Trouble is I'm in Lady Tara's shoes - most of the 'interesting' characters around here would sooner beat you senseless than let you take a shot. I think I'm just seriously bored with this place, but I'll try to see it through your eyes.....wanna come and do a group shoot in Coffs?
Get ready for the best shot in the world of the golden arches, in black and white...lol

Some of my most interesting street shots is when I throw the camera over my back and click the button randomly. Most are not in focus but occasionally one will surprise me. A remote would be ideal. Tuck it under your arm and go for a walk. hehehe Not saying it would be good enough to ribbon, but fun none the less.

Looks like the key is to shoot in front of a billboard, huh?
10/21/2008 05:33:19 AM · #29
Only if the billboard has a hot chick on it. :-)

Top contenders in my opinion - Nixter, e301 (hope he shoots for this one), Iraklis (check out his portfolio if you haven't yet), figaro (if he still has his gear!), Pawdrix, iamwoman, xianart, dougi555, salmiakki, arsenal (though he doesn't seem to be around much), Gaby_G (though haven't seen her around much either), Shalrath, LevT, the folks who've been practicing in the SCSC thread, some folks who unfortunately don't play here anymore, and a whole bunch more I didn't get around to listing. In other words, it's gonna be a good challenge! As an aside, check out the work of some the folks listed here if you need an idea of what to be looking for. Don't limit yourself to billboards with hot chicks. :-)

I noticed that 90% of the photos have a person as the main theme. Would you say that is a 'requirement' for street photography?

persons but not only persons. I think that you need the "signs" of the persons not need the real precence.

Deb, I'm honoured to be included in the same sentence as these guys! I have to say, I am very happy to shoot for this challenge.

So, ghostly abandoned streets would probly not qualify really.

Good luck to me finding people in Riga, the city is practically abandoned (not really, but close to it) :)

I ain't throwing my camera anywhere!!! Haha. Might consider tucking it under my arm, or maybe just borrow my friend's groovy lens attatchment that takes a photo to the side of where you're actually pointing it.

I would recommend that anyone who's serious about looking at Street Photography go outside of DPC. There is some great work here but much of it and especially the Top placing images are a little too polished and both feel very authentic.

Street work is really good when it's raw, imo. When the photographer starts bringing a commercial "polished" eye into the process a lot gets lost.

NYC Photobloggers has a few very cool shooters. I might go back and cherry pick my faves when I have the time.

I was glad to see those images ericwoo posted. Boring cliches. Just my opinion but I can't stand them. If you go out and look at...say ten street blogs, you'll see those images are a dime a dozen. It's been done to death and then some, 50 years ago. Old stuff...been there, done that. Not much of a Challenge standing across the street from a glam Ad and waiting 15-20-30 minutes for a contradiction to walk by. "Pretty Young Girl vs. Ugly Old Woman. Homeless people tend to sit or sleep on public benches and right next to or above them are Ads, that usually conflict with their situation. Again...not too original and not so clever after the 300th time you've seen the same shot. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. ;)

The Challenge has potential if people get out there and try something new. There are hundreds of Street Photo sites and blogs to peruse. Check them out and AVOID all the cliches...

There's a lot out there that hasn't been shot.

Cheers

I have never done street photography, I fancy giving this challenge a go though. But only if my husband comes with me as I will feel a plum walking round taking photos of stuff alone.

I looked on wikipedia earlier and the article on there is really interesting and helpful to a first timer i think - Wikipedia - I may be wrong but it certainly gave me some direction.

Is it OK to take a picture at a zoo for this challenge?

ooops, sorry, wrong thread.

just thought I'd spice up the discussion over here a bit. :)

That would be Zoo Photography and most likely wouldn't fit the bill. Unless are defining out, the element of a street. Just an opinion but some element of a street, even a street vibe, should be somewhere present.

Street Photography is pretty wide open, as is BUT it's not an "anything goes" genre either. I mean, candids at a backyard BBQ don't really qualify... much like at a zoo, you wouldn't really capture the essence of the street in any way. I assume it's possible but the odds are low that those locations will provide the real goods.

GOALS:
1) To get within the top 20 (this one got me 21st place)
2) To actually shoot for the challenge and not forget about it (Like street photography II)...although my work might get in the way :(

edit: oooh and I actually have a telephoto lens this time too! I just might have to call in sick :p

I had lots of fun shooting this yesterday. I was just walking around and I would choose select spots and click away. Lots of things can happen in 15 minutes standing at a busy downtown intersection. Later on I attached my remote to my camera and let the cam. hang around my neck like a tourist. I held the remote in my hand, inside my coat pocket and just looked in other directions as I clicked, no one ever noticed anything. haha! Got some cool shots of people's knees and clouds too but that's part of the game.

Then my remote stopped working; day over.

Thats a damn good idea. I just spent a couple of hours walking around town, trying to look like a tourist. That should work, theoretically, its a tourist kind of town (although everyone knows everyone, so you feel like an idiot!). But no, every time I picked the camera up, about 20 people would stand and stare at me, trying to work out what I was taking. It was SO frustrating! Then I had the problem of finding a good background and waiting till someone came into range. Not only did no-one interesting walk by, but they stopped and waited till I'd put the camera down to pass by. Grrrrr. This is so tough. My town is REALLY friendly - too friendly, they all stop and talk to you, say hello, look you in the eye, and either run away in case they're recognised or stop and smile for the camera. I need a Maxwell Smart style camera, but then I'd be shot down in flames for not having enough megapixels! I give up, I look forward to seeing what you all come up with, and wish you all the very best of luck on this one.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Excellent stuff. I need to (and will!) go back when I have more time to kill...

Would something like this count as street photography, or does it have to be a person with no money holding a sign in order to not get DNMC comments?

10/23/2008 11:24:11 PM · #50
Yes the picture you posted have would qualify, however be cognizant of this comment:

because one can make the same case of a shot with a walking individual on the street (though I do guess it was a bit of sarcasm from your post :)

I would think that most people here would agree that "Henri Cartier-Bresson" is one of the foremost Street Photographers. Check him out if you are not familiar.
Cheers and good luck, look forward to seeing your image and voting in general.
