If the shot has more impact in color, leave it in color. I routinely convert darn near everything to B&W at some point in processing, just to see how I like it. But I do leave a lot of stuff in color.

Pleased to see you've been bitten by the bug. :-)

I came across this site today. Some of the most powerful and stunning images I've ever seen. There is a running commentary with the photo's so turn on your volume. Do yourself a favour and have a look. It's presented as various slide shows with a selection menu.
WARNING: Some very moving and poignant content. Also some strong language.

Oh yeah and you want to watch this video of famous street photographer Bruce Gilden at work. Makes you wonder if he is going to get someone punch him on the nose the way he goes about it.

This guy is slick and demonstrates how to do it. (Joel Meyerowitz On Street Photography)

Unfortunately, an incredibly nasty head cold hit me all week and I wasn't able to get out and shoot. There's some time today, but back to work tomorrow, and I really don't relish the thought of spending the last day of the weekend disappointing myself last-minute.

I was looking forward to entering this one too, but I guess I'll have to settle with voting on it.

I promise I won't go back and lower all my scores on Friday and Saturday either.

My shot doesn't work if it isn't in color and I'm prepared to continue my downward spiral that I seem to have found lately. Oh well - I like that shot and that is all that matters (can someone tag this thread so I can refer to it again at the end of voting)

** looks in mirror and repeats "all that matters is that "I" like it, I don't need virtual ribbons or 7+ scores on DPC"

WOW...that guys a horror show. That's the most obnoxious thing I've seen in a while. Pretty tacky and it doesn't seem like he's capturing anything close to what he said he's trying to get.

All he seems to be capturing are people scared or shocked by his abrupt action...or confused by whatever. Certainly not people deep in thought but some strange mid-reaction to whatever they register he's doing in that split second.

He did say one thing I found of value...

"If you smell the street by looking at the photo
...it's a street photograph"

I would add the word "sound" somewhere to that statement. If you can hear the sounds of the street that's very cool, as well.

eta:If he ever did that to me, I'd plant my camera deep into his head.

Heh! I got a kick out of him. He's a character on his own! I just hope the two of you never run into each other. Equipment could get damaged!

And I'm in. Still waiting for mom's pick to confirm, but I'm in.

Iraklis, thank you for the Joseph Koudelka. Felt like a lesson in seeing.

I think he said he was 61. I think I could kick his ass...?

I just took that about twenty minutes ago and did a quickie B&W conversion. Taken pretty close but with respect. I don't think I've ever gotten as close as he did in most of those shots and I'm surprised he's a Magnum Photographer.

Funny, I was speaking earlier in the thread about raw, immediacy factor in SP but that's way over the top.

Surely, you mean his own camera. Why waste your own?

I was amused by the whole thing. I wonder if he wasn't showing off a little more than usual for documentary purposes. And I did find his photos more interesting than Meyerowitz's. Still, I think the best interactions to be seen in good street photography are ones that don't involve the photographer.

Thanks Thingfish for sharing those. Whenever you're feeling self-conscious about shooting in the street, just think of this guy.

There's a shot of the same lady above, winking at me.

It's interesting the difference between the two. Outside of the wink it's another world in B&W.

the first one was more intense. the black and white often add emotive content to the photo

I love the wink! It really adds some character to it but, you're right...the B&W conversion really does the trick! It has an extra "depth" to it.

Gorgeous captures btw!

"If you smell the street by looking at the photo

Actually, that's a really great piece of advice to follow! It makes perfect sense and puts things into perspective...as of course, does Steve's version of asking ourselves why the viewer would want to see a picture of (fill in the blank here)? LOL

Eric, thank you for that reminder to use the color adjustments even during a B&W conversion! It really does make a huge difference!

I really enjoyed the links that Jan and Eric have provided for us all.

I'm kind of dubious about Bruce Gilden's work because he's actually an "in your face" type of street photographer. I'm not that brave to attempt something like that...especially, in MY neighborhood! LOL I'm not sure that his style quite captures my, personal idea of street photography either. I prefer seeing shots of people totally oblivious to the camera for the most part. Even when they appear to be looking right at you, most of them are not really "seeing" you. That's the ironic part, I find. Lost in their own thoughts.

Joel Meyerwitz (sp?) has a style to his shots and I think that it's creative that he's wearing all black...which does "hide" the camera more or less until he's ready to use it. Should have thought of that! Bright red with a black camera kind of doesn't "hide" it. The second day though, I unthinkingly DID wear a black coat and kept the camera at my side until I was ready to bring it up and start shooting.

Glad these were posted! Thank you!

OK, I have done it. Now im very very scared : )

I think I will use one of the others, which isnt as strong a story shot as my free study.

Good luck everyone!

You put a street shot in a free study?...good luck with that...hehe...

I concur. Learned that lesson...
10/26/2008 08:02:07 PM · #123
I THINK that I've decided which one to put in....edited it....it's definitely not DPC style but, it is SP Photography Style...at least, I THINK...now, I'm doubting everything! LOL I've taken advice from this thread, put them side by side and holding my breath, chosen to the best of my ability. The bottom line is, it's the one that I like. To me, it tells a story and Pawdrix, I hope that you don't need to ask me why I'm showing you what I'm showing you! *WINK, GRIN* If I can pass that test, I think I may have something! LOL

Anyone notice that there's no "Gallery Choice" for Street Photography? Wonder why that is? LOL

SP as a Free Study entry? Only if you like to be saddistic towards yourself! ;)

Here is a pic that I took for fun while I was downtown taking my Street Photography entry pic yesterday... You can see how helpful the black and white colour adjustments are... I changed the Red channel to make all the red signs go from a dark grey to a bright white... VERY hepful for the pic... (The AMC and H&M signs were red...)
