Is this street photography challenge only for "CANDID STREET PHOTOGRAPHY" or does it include all styles of street photography?
Challenge Details: Street photography is a type of documentary photography that usually features people in candid situations in public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings. Go out and take your best photo using street photography techniques.
It says "USUALLY FEATURES PEOPLE IN CANDID SITUATIONS IN PUBLIC PLACES" but does not say "exclusively features people in candid situations in public places"
Also scouring articles on the net about street photography it looks like one cant pin it down to any one style and a lot of freedom of expression should be allowed. A street itself is not even a rigid requirement.
Regards
Jan

yea... well, this goes back to the classic argument... look at the previous winners from previous street photography challenges... they are all candid pics of people... For example, If I entered that one I jsut posted below, It would do bad... |

Sorry cant see the pic you posted below?
But look at this entry that came 3rd in the first street photography challenge here on DPchallenge. No people in it nor anything candid about it really. It's a great street photography shot nevertheless.

If this is your outtake, I'm gonna get creamed. You could have saved it for motion blur...

BTW motion blur is basic editing... and that pic isn't very good under basic editing rules...
But... seriously... everyone give my your opinion...??? would it get voted down for not being a candid pic of people?

I wouldn't downvote it for that.

I think you should submit it or not, without fishing for opinions on it beforehand either way. |

I already submitted another picture... I didn't post it for the purpose of fishing for opinions... I posted it for the purpose of showing the benefit of colour adjustments in a Black and White picture...

I think some people will vote it down for no people showing. I think others will vote it down if it is not clearly on a street in a city environment. My expectation is that the definition of street photography is so fuzzy that this will be an interesting challenge.
I considered photographing a shoehorn in the street outside my house.

I took a photo which is not of people and is in a mall environment, which the description allows for but I really don't think anyone would go for it. Which is why I've not submitted it, I know I'd get DNMC slated and voted down. Bugger that for a carry on.

Thanks, though I don't want to get in the habit of doing them too often. I need to give some time for new members to come on board, so that I get some really confused comments of "I don't get it.." |

I think I chose the wrong one to enter but whats done is done!! After the challenge I will post my other 2 options and would love some advise from you guys (although I will cry when you all tell me I should have entered a different one!)
I really enjoyed the results of my wandering the streets, even though I was very nervous about doing it at the time. Might go for more wanders to see what happens :) |

Came across some interesting definitions on street photography from various sources on the internet:
"If I ask someone to pose for me, or this person notices my camera and has enough time to pose - than it's more like portrait photography, or in some way documentary photography.
I would say that street photography is like a sophisticated form of candid photography with a special message from the photographer"
"Defining street photography might do injustice to it̢۪s free, liberated and completely non-uniform nature."
"Simply put street photography includes any photograph made anywhere in public places. Some people narrow it down to urban settings and some people think there must be people present in these kinds of photos. But the bottom line is that each street photographer will find their own meaning and approach therefore whatever definition they might arrive at will work just as well."
"The purpose of street photography will again vary from one street photographer to another. Some photographers are interested in simply and honestly documenting life as they see it, at times adding their own interpretation to the scene. Some want to make artistic photographs of available street scenes and others basically enjoy taking pictures and do it purely for the pleasure of it."
So the methods of shooting street photographs vary greatly amongst different photographersâ€Â¦
And so clearly street photography has no need for any set of rules and guidelines on HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE, and better be independently created and elaborated by the photographer.

A low vote accompanied by a comment that indicates the voter is looking for photos with a message or story that they did not see in mine. Not what I wanted to hear, but nonetheless an insightful comment that is appreciated.

Not sure if you know but the scores are being posted in another thread.
To your point though, there are a lot of images I've seen that have no strong point of interest or say anything special going on, to say the least.
It seems like some people had a checklist of two things...
Street...CHECK!
Person...CHECK!
...and not much consideration for much else. Many have no feeling of the street at all. I figured that would be understood as a core element.

'Tis a learning experience. :-) For many, this is a relatively new and uncomfortable venture. I'm just pleased to see people getting out there and taking a stab at it. Maybe we should run the SCSC a bit longer after this to let those who may have developed an interest in the genre take a bit longer to acclimate to the rigors of such. |

I think it's the first time I look forward to reading comments and hoping for more and stronger feedback - by golly I am getting thicker skin by the minute! Really though, it's just so interesting to get to peek into ppl's neighborhoods and see their world through their eyes... and to see how they see it ... let's journey - what say you bvy .. you started this side challenge? |
