Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS

Hello,

I will start my introduction with a little bit of information about myself. I have always enjoyed art. I have been painting for quite a few years now, so I guess the transition to SLR was inevitable? I had always loved photography, but was limited by point and click cameras, recently after the death of my trusted Coolpix I finally decided to spend a little bit extra and buy myself a D-SLR camera for my trip to Beijing. I must say that I have never been so happy with a purchase. I decided on the Canon 450D based on the reviews and fact that I got it for a pretty good price. I have been enjoying every minute spent with my camera and hope to compete in the challenges soon. I am very happy to have found this forum.

Thanks for the welcome! I am now considering getting a full membership so I can also have my own portfolio (you have some very nice photos in your portofolio).

Yes it would seem I have stumbled upon a huge addiction, I am already contemplating buying some good lenses (maybe even L series)...I am slowly realizing that the money spent on the 450D is just the tip of the iceberg.

Ah yes. There's always the desire for more and better glass. You already have one of the most fun little lenses around - the 50mm. And I'd also recommend a membership/portfolio. Not only is it a good way to post pictures for comment and critique, but you'll need a place to post pictures if you decide to join in on one of the many side challenges that are ongoing at any given time. The side challenges are not competitions, but a very good way to share and learn based on a topic. You'll find a side challenge with cell phone cameras, one for street candids, and I think there's one for sports, too. Plenty to do and take up too much of your time! :-)

I agree with Melethia--I didn't get nearly as much benefit (or enjoyment!) out of this site until I joined and began posting images and entering challenges (participation is its own reward, winning is not important--that it what I keep telling myself, anyway ;-) The thing that really makes this site worthwhile, in my opinion, is the sharing: expertise, knowledge, experiences, and IMAGES. And the diversity of vision, style, technique, subject matter from photographers all over the world is what keeps this site endlessly interesting and wonderful.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I think I have found the perfect site to improve my skills and communicate with fellow photographers. I am quite happy I stumbled upon this site in my www travels.

Is it ok to post links to images being hosted by other sites, if I do not have a full membership yet?

Yes, you may post links. If and when you get a portfolio, you'll find you get more comments here - it's just easier. Edit to say I just saw your post - post links, not the photo itself. To do that, use the little "world" icon (third from the left at the top of the message) and insert the www. address for your shot. Make sense?
