Write a tutorial? Don't you have to be smart to do that? :-D

since you deleted the folder - have you checked the recycle bin ?

12/10/2008 02:24:53 PM · #56
If it was a "Ctrl+A" followed by a "Shift+Delete" (delete it without moving to "recyle bin"). I feel for you. It still might be possible to get it back with undelete utilities. Try this free program first //www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html

Thats a good idea. I did check... no no luck. Actually I keep cleaning the recycle bin every 2-3 days.. the HDD on teh laptop is on teh edge.. only a few gigs left.. and I have to clean everything I can to give it working swaps.

I think I never use shift-delete.. but I will try that util, thank you!

This is the workflow on every Sunday (sometimes Tuesday):
(Note: Canon util creates folders by date as you may know)

- edit and submit to DPC.
- submit original right awy (I shd be slapped for not doing that THIS one time:-(
- attach the external HDD
- copy all BUT the most recent OR the active folder that had submissions+originals
- delete all BUT the most recent OR the active folder that had submissions+originals FROM the laptop disk, since they are backed up
- right away clean recycle bin to make more space (only have 7-10 GB left on the disk)
- go out next day and shoot
- repeat the cycle every week

This time, I made a mistake in 5th step... where I backed up everything but the active folder, then came back to the laptop and deleted EVERYthing in the pictures folder. These folders are HUGE if you shoot in RAW and have a 4GB SDHC card!

In most any game a mistake is a forfeit.

But site council officers, please no brutality. Why can't you just give him probation? Don't tie him to the whipping post. Or worst yet, the photographer stockades, where he gets bombarded with shots from strange-cameras, and torturous verbal-comments.

...Realistically...
Why isn't there an ADVICE section for newcomers to learn what CAN and CANNOT be done or what SHOULD be done and be AWARE of.

Ever since I've came here to DPC, there always are so many CONSEQUENCES and PRECATIONS that ARE NOT SPELLED OUT anywhere except in forums.

I always assume my backup copies are on my CF-Cards, recently I've actually made and additional Backup folder of all the photos, as they are copied straight from the Media!
You can get One-Terabyte HDs really cheap now.

Caveat Emptor!

Prash, I keep one folder just for challenges. As soon as I decide on my entry I put an original of it in there, then my entry copy when it's done.

That way, whatever mistakes I make with the original folders doesn't matter to my entries, unless I manage to break the whole system (which I've done once... SO FAR).
It also makes it much easier later, if I want to show my original or try a re-edit.

(you ONLY have 7-10gigs left? The other day I was down to 300ish MB! Yeah, I know, skating on seriously thin ice here...)

Sorry Shannon, just trying to understand this old self-DQ request again.

I just came across this image which was DQ'd upon the author's request once he realized he inadvertently violated the rules (great image BTW, a winner in my eyes).

How was this self DQ allowed and not mine?

Only trying to understand if I missed something.

Thanks for your patience.

One assumes that SC hadn't asked for the original of that shot before the photographer realised they had broken the rules. Once they ask for the original it just looks like an excuse to avoid a normal DQ.

That makes sense. I think I was asked for the original upon which I panicked since I couldn't find it.

I got my answer.

Even the best of the best sometimes misplace an original. Life events sometimes preclude DPC events.

If it does violate those rules, you are lying to us -- not just "witholding the truth." It is not our obligation to have to ask you again just to make sure you are following the rules.

I think the other thing is: What do you have to lose? If you self-dq it counts against you as a regular DQ. If you point out that you broke a rule you're no worse off. And you can't self-dq if you have already have any dq's against you in the last 25. The truth will set you free!

( The only difference is that shameful pink color on the title. )

Sorry again. But this is confusing now. In this case, the user admitted it was a rule violation (although inadvertent), yet the DQ request was honored?

"Disqualification Details: user advises vignette added inadvertently."

Again, only trying to clearly understand the rule so I be extra careful in future. I don't want to argue, I just want to understand the rules.

Though the photographer brought it to our attention, it was a normal DQ per the rules.

My first (and only) DQ was sort of the same: I ribboned, went for the original, realized time/date on the new camera was wrong, and told SC immediately, within a very short time after results were announced. It was still a DQ of course, but at least nobody had to go through the process of attempting validation, and I didn't hog a piece of the front page for long...
