That statement simply not true. All my lenses are "narrower" than f/5.6, and I have never lost AF capability.

From the 40D manual (an excerpt which is the same as the 1Ds Mark III manual) . . .

With lenses whose maximum aperture is larger than f/5.6
With all AF points, cross-type AF sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines is possible.

With lenses whose maximum aperture is larger than f/2.8*
With the center AF point, high-precision, cross-type AF sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines is possible. The center AF point's sensitivity to vertical and horizontal lines is about twice as sensitive as the other AF points.
The remaining eight AF points are horizontal-line sensitive or vertical-line sensitive.
*Except with the EF28-80mm f/2.8-4L USM and EF50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lenses.

I graduate in May and for my present my wife has told me she will buy me a new lens.

Which of these would be better suited for mostly outdoors with natural light?
I do mostly seniors but some weddings and family will be done also.
Would the IS model be better in either of these?
Will the bokeh be close on both lens and will the IS change the look of the bokeh?
I have the 40D is there another lens that I should look at?

I have really wanted to get some quality glass and I think that this is a good chance to get some of the best. Anything else I need to know about these lens or others that would help would be great.

Thanks
Shane

I'm partial to the 2.8 IS model. I recommend getting the most that you can afford (and even just a bit more, if you can swing it), because one day, you'll wish you had 2.8, or wish you had IS. You may not need it today, but sooner-or-later...

If you slap a teleconverter on a lens and the max (widest aperture) is narrower than 5.6, i.e. f/8.0 then the lens+teleconverter will not autofocus on a 40D. Hence a 70-200/4.0 + 2.0x TC becomes a 140-400/8.0 with no AF on a xxD body.

Max aperture is the wide open aperture not any old aperture wider than 5.6 you can stop down to at will. The lens is not yet stopped down to your aperture of choice while you peer through the viewfinder and autofocus.

Right. I guess I am being misunderstood. What I am trying to say is that the TC, because its addition to the lens adds to the optical complexity of the system, reduces the maximum aperture of lens/widest possible opening/lowest f-number of the lens by 1 or 2 full stops, for the 1.4x and 2.0x respectively. When the maximun aperture is f/5.6 or wider/smaller f-number, then the lens will autofocus on an xxD body.

Fred Miranda has a good buy/sell section and that's where I got my used 70-200 2.8 IS. These things tend to hold their value but even a hundred or two off for a like-new copy is worth it, IMO.

I agree with the statement above, got for the 2.8 and/or IS if you can swing it; otherwise you may be kicking yourself later. If you plan on doing wildlife, you may find yourself shooting in lower light conditions and it will come in handy.

Just to add fuel to the AF fire my 40D will AF just fine with my 17-40 F4L with a Tamron 2x teleconverter.

Hmmm. Interesting.

Well then I give up. I guess its better to say that AF will be unreliable with some TCs. All I know for sure sure is that my 70-200/4.0 + 1.4x TC focuses great, as it should. But, I bet that wouldn't be the case with the 2.0x.

Try before you buy, do what makes you happy.

More than likely because the camera doesn't know the TC is attached, that's common when using 3rd party TC's. Still enough light coming through for autofocus to work, even though less than the amount of light the manufacturer will guarantee autofocus to work at. Does your TC show up in EXIF on your shots? IF you shoot wide open with it attcked, assuming it shows up in exif, what is max aperture recorded as?

I know i've asked everyone this question but would it be stupid for me to buy the 700-200 4.0L non IS. I've sold a lens and have the money for the lens now and not another dime! I can buy the lens or the money will just be spent on a vacation that I'll be going on soon. I want an L lens and I fill like this may be my only chance to get one. Would you buy this lens or just blow the money?

thanks for all the hlep.

Shane, as someone in here mentioned, they hold their value, so if you're unhappy with it and want to move up to the 2.8, then it's easy enough to sell, wouldn't be surprised if you used it for two years and its value went up. If your financial situation is good right now, then it's a no-brainer, get it and you won't be disappointed.

I had that lens before and it is a great lens. You won't be disappointed with that lens and you can use it as a stepping stone til your ready for the 2.8L IS version.

Thanks, I just didn't want to buy just to be buying. I thought this was a great lens but so many said to just save and get the 2.8 IS but I doubt I can do that. When I have money it doesn't tend to stay around long. So if I wait I'll end up with nothing.

Thanks john, I just needed that push to get me to order it. I noticed that many of the L lens jump around in price. It seems like you look at one for 1100 and then the next thing you know you can't find one for less then 1200. Is this normal?

Hi Shane, I don't really see that as I do most of my shopping on ebay, the great marketplace equalizer :-) I did a quick scan and found the 70-200mm non IS f/4 for around 550-650 and the IS version around $1000.

I just bought the F4 non IS, and man am I excited to put this puppy to use. I found one on craigslist.com and met up with a young student who needed some cash. I picked it up for a good price and is in excellent shape. My set is complete for now. Next upgrade body when I can justify the purchase.

I have been very happy with the results of my F4L non-IS, as long as you know it's limitations you'll get some fantastic results.

Well I finally did it. Thanks for all the help and knowledge. I love my new 70-200 f/4L. I can't tell you how much it means to me to be able to ask a very simple question and get so many great responses. thanks again
