Alan, since Jeb's bringing cups and plates, I've contacted Brent to see if he wants me to bring the chips or some of the drinks so he doesn't have to cover it all.

You cant bring the ice, the HOT models would melt it all.

And even though the hot models could potentially grill the burgers and dogs merely by being close by, I am counting on Jed to bring the grill just in case :)

Hot models are usually cold on the inside. (bring on the jokes)

Ha -- seriously... hope to see you there -- it would be nice to see you again, and not have a bunch of bleachers in the way of talking to you!

OK, since Nik is sharing drink duty with Brent, what do we need that I can bring (that doesn't need refrigerated)?

Looking through the list, how about utensils? I'll bring forks/spoons/knives.

Has anyone checked in on the weather for the weekend? We may have to bail, not sure yet.
06/18/2009 07:33:04 AM · #164
Ouch. Last time I had checked it was scattered T Storms. Now it says showers
06/18/2009 08:06:58 AM · #165
Well we are camping from Fri-Sun and it just looks real bad.
06/18/2009 09:25:18 AM · #166
Accuweather.com is showing Sunday as 80 degrees with "clouds and sun with a thunderstorm possible."

Saturday is "showers and thunderstorms."

is this a rain or shine weekend??
06/18/2009 09:48:01 AM · #168
I think it is for me (as long as I'm not going to be the only one there). I've got a poncho I can wear during the scattered showers.

check out NOAA weather. It's okay if you are just going for Sunday but we are supposed to be camping for the weekend. It's looking more like we may not be there.

Yeah, I don't think I'd want to camp for a few days through all those storms.

So get a room for Saturday night. Rickett's Glen hotel. Or the Central Park hotel in Benton ($65).

Or go on Priceline or Hotwire and get a decent hotel room in Scranton for 60-75 - only 45 mins away

I don't believe any of this stuff. Weather here on northeast is so unpredictable that you can't even trust next days forecast.

Here's my .02 for the weather...

I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about camping, given the forecast. That could be kinda nasty. I'd check on availability of the RG Hotel (I'm in Room 2). It's not expensive, and the accommodations aren't bad.

The idea of it being cloudy actually appeals to me quite a bit as far as shooting the falls is concerned. Obviously we should all be prepared with rain gear, and garbage bags (or whatever) to cover our equipment to keep it safe.

Last year we had a lot of sunshine which created dappled light on the falls and messed with the exposures, I thought. There was just too much contrast between the highlighted sunny spots, and the dark areas, in my opinion.

I would much rather have a bunch of clouds, and let Mother Nature act as a giant softbox for us :) I think our falls shots will turn out beautifully under these conditions!

I might suggest that we reconsider our itinerary a little bit, depending on the weather. For example, we may not want to do the entire hike if it's going to be excessively rainy. We could start at our meeting point and visit Ganoga Falls (the tallest one in the park) and others at the top, and retreat back to the cars if we don't want to continue to hike to the bottom of the trail. And we could reconvene at the bottom and do Kitchen Falls (I'm going by memory here... not sure if that's the right name)... the falls that are right by the lower lot parking area.

Anyhow, we can play all of that by ear. I would doubt that we'll end up with a day where it is non-stop rain -- we just don't see too many of those.

And all this rain the NE has been having might make the falls run better too.

Just remember to bring good hiking boots - you don't want to be on wet trails in sneakers.
