Now I think that i did poor because no one understood the idea, which is fine. The concept here is that in Chicago the traffic officers tend ot override the street sign that are in place, hence the "Official Road Sign" title. Anyway, that is not the issue here, the issue is I would like to see more comments on why voters voted the way they did. So please help me and send me your comments on my Road Sign entry. Much appreciated! I'm new and learning everyday so whatever you say on constructive and helpful!
Thanks - Richie

Officers everywhere override the traffic signs. I think everyone understood the idea. |

I would've thought that but I received this comment:
"The road sign is by far too small and an inconsequential part of this photo."
That is why I thought no one understood. Oh well! On to the next challenge. |

Yes, that is my comment. To expand, I believe the challenge was to show an actual (physical) road sign in a creative manner. Although I see where you're going with the photo I don't think road sign substitutes really met the spirit of the challenge. My comment, which was supposed to be humorous, referred to the actual, physical road sign in the background of your photo.

I see...well my wife gave my photo a 1 and asked why I didn't come in last place! hahaha! Well no hard feelings I just wanted to hear the voters instead of just getting scored. |

Well Richie, at least 5 people have looked at your shot since the challenge closed.
I was one of your 'ones' - and I don't normally indulge in comment like this, but here goes ...
1. I too thought shots should be of physical road signs - metal things on sticks, basically. So you lost out on challenge relevance.
2. Compositionally it's awful: my eye wanders round and round the frame without ever being held anywhere for the smallest moment. I'm sure there are tutorials here, and doubtless plenty elsewhere on the web that explain the principles behind the conventions of composition: they're not there because a cartel of photogs got together and imposed them, they're there because people have worked out a few basic ideas of what makes a pleasing composition on the eye. The only thing that holds interst at all is the horse's head, and that looks so much like an accident it can't be intended - else the rest of the image would be better grouped.
3. Sure it's in focus, sure it's pretty well exposed. But the moment of light you've chosen is deathly - there's so little graduation anywhere, and where there is, you've ignored it. Your point of view is likewise uninspired - it's a completely everyday scene, from a completely everyday angle. Even if you'd just crouched down exactly where you were this shot would have been better to me.
4. Why use that background? why that moment for the shot? what did it gain you? There's nothing going on. The three cars, a bunch of pedestrians, part of a horse ... what was the point? It's all perfectly in focus too - so what's the relevance of it? Can't see any point myself - and you haven't even given yourself the benefit of some distance - you could have shot up the street, to place those guys against some real depth, or waited until something at least a bit more dramatic was going on in front of them.
5. Colour. This looks straight-out-of-the-camera: a very very ordinary palette. The usual benfit of that is to capture a scene where the colour is the significant point of the image, but here I don't see that. The green car is so bright, and the high-vis jackets, but what use that is, what it communicates ...
The reason you didn't get many comments, is that there isn't really anything to comment on - no obviously glaring technical errors (focus, alignment, noise, DOF, are all acceptable to the masses) - but there's also no obvious message, nothing eye-catching, and your connection to the challenge is tenuous.

To me your shot was borderline "Snapshot".
There seemed to be an overall lack of sharpness and to much going on.
My eyes were searching all over the image and found no place too rest or concentrate on.
I'm sorry but to me it was just an average shot as far as idea and composition.

if the 'road sign' on the backs of the officers was the focal point of this image - at least that should have been in focus...
using a wider aperture to blur the BG would have helped make the jackets pop out, and given less busyness to the photo.
overall - there just isnt anything too spectacular about it.
did you only take one shot of them? from one angle?
from what i see about cops they tend to stand around alot, which would give you plenty of time to shoot away, and try different things ;}
if a police officer reads this, no offense, and i don't do anything illegal...

E301: Great feedback, that is exactly what I need to hear. I am a rookie in this photog thing so all your points are welcomed. I actually printed them out for reference. All points to keep in mind. Thanks for being real.
Calvus: My wife said the same thing and said I should've been kicked out for submitting it! hehe! Big lesson learned here.
Soup: Great suggestion on using a wider aperature to blur the background, that didn't cross my mind. However, I took about 10 shot of them and this was the best one (or not)!
