Due to a disqualification for lack of original of the second place entry, this challenge has been recalculated. Congatulations to the new top 10, to nixer for a red ribbon finish and MAK for a yellow ribbon!

Well congrats to the photog's who moved up in the top places. Too bad as well since the DQ'ed photo was quite good. |

I'm happy for MAK -- but feel so bad for Miles! The whole DQ process still taps into mega butterflies (or I think I should say hornets) in my tummy!

I know exactly what you mean, on the few occasions I've had validation requests I've spent the whole week convinced I've done something wrong and I'm going to get DQ'd! It's like being at customs at the airport where you get nervous even though you've got nothing to hide! |

I keep all of my original files tied in a condom and hidden up my bum in case of validation.

Hmmm. It just occurred to me that I didn't shoot my "Back to school" shot in RAW (stupid... I had changed to shoot in jpg the day before because I was goofing around) and I imported it directly into Bridge; I assume this would result in a DQ. Of course I already deleted the files from the card.
Two questions:
1. Can anyone recommend easy-to-use software that can restore the original?
2. If I am asked for the original, will this be acceptable (since this isn't the edited shot)? |

As long as you have the original JPEG, that's fine. |

I'm not sure if Bridge tampers with the file during the transfer. If not, and you didn't save over the image after the transfer then you still have your original.
Otherwise there are several recovery programs that can be run on the card to retrieve erased images even after the card has been reformatted. Google is your friend in that case. I use RescuePro which came with a sandisk card I have. |

Yes, I have the original jpg after it was imported into bridge. I'm a little confused now... this seems to contradict an email I received back from the site after asking about this same question about a month ago here was the reply I received:

Hiya,
The crucial question here is are you shooting in RAW, or JPEG? If RAW, the originals can be imported in this manner as they can't be altered. However, if you're shooting JPEG then there's a possibility that your transfer software is altering the images while it imports them. If the latter, I recommend that you read the following thread, which details the Transfer Software guidelines:

Over the weekend I was told by another DPCer that if I bring my pictures into my camera through bridge something would happen to the file to cause it to become disqualified. Is this true??
When I put my card into my laptop and the auto window comes up to ask what I want it to do, I choose the option to import using Bridge. |

Thanks guys/gals, for the nice words of support for my Aunt's memorial image!
No worries about the DQ, and it was really nice to see MAK's killer portrait get a ribbon.
Just to give you the clear reason for the DQ so you can take a look at your own workflow to avoid what happened here. I learned CS4 by reading Scott Kelby's book initially. He goes into workflow from importing to print, and I just followed his template. The importer that goes into Bridge has a box that you can check to "Convert to DNG" during the import process. He suggests you select that button as it future proof's your images in case the camera manufactures decide to change formats in the future (as Kodak did with the photo CD). There are some other advantages as well that he goes into. There IS the option to embed the original RAW file in the DNG, but I didn't do that because I was worried about the file sizes getting out of control large. You can also shoot RAW+JPEG, but I haven't done that in the past - might think about doing that in the future. I don't know how that all works, as I haven't tried it. Anyway, I didn't realize that the DNG files don't count as original anymore for DPC purposes, but apparently they can be altered during the process, though I don't know enough about DNG files to know how. At any rate, I haven't yet decided whether the benefits of DNG are worth not being able to enter any DPC challenges, or whether a change in workflow will allow me to do both. I'll explore that in the next few weeks and decide what I want to do.
At any rate, hopefully this helps a little for those of you that are confused as to why I got a DQ. Cheers, and good luck to all of you with your entries!!! |

Sorry about the DQ:
I'm a bit tired of sunset, but this was a good photo and I hate to see it lose the ribbon. I like your attitude about it, however! Best wishes, |

Do you still have the file on your card, by any chance?
I had a dq on an image when I first started. I thought I was following the rules. I imported the file into photoshop elements organizer, but when I worked on the file, I did a Save As. What caused the problem was this: I used the organizer to rate the photo and I told it to save in version sets. Even though I didn't modify the original file, Photoshop organizer tagged it as a photoshop file, and since photoshop had changed it, it wasn't the original unedited file any longer -- even though I never edited the file.

RescuePro would probably recover your original file from your card?
Worth a try:) |
