Dpreview announcement and hands-on

Pretty exciting news. L lens and USM on a fixed zoom camera. :)

Also announced: the S1 with 10x zoom IS. Check dpreview.

I knew it was coming, but I though it would be at the PMA. Thanks for the heads up.

Looks really interesting to me since I was holding out on the 300 until there was a camera with a LCD like my G2! And I value compactness enough that if the lens range is significant I don't need interchangeable lenses.

But one requirement I do have that can't see here is a threaded lens front, so I can use filters and attachments without a silly adapter like my G2. One of the side cuts I see in the article looks like it might be threaded, but I can't tell. Anyone know?

Of course it all boils down to quality. So we'll see.

You can add lenses and filters: look here
To me this camear looks very interesting. Can't wait for the first images and detailed reviews to come up.

Thanks, it does still look like it needs an adapter for filters, but it's still hard to tell. There is one shot of the camera with a small filter like object laying in front of it, but there's no explanation of what it is, nor why they are showing it that way!

Look at this from Canon's website. Seems they INCLUDE a threaded filter adapter.

And it does come with the nice remote control, like the G3 and G5.
Seems really to be the replacment of the G-Series, or am i wrong here?

I just had a look at the images
on the Powershot site: I'm not too amazed, they seem to be somewhat muddy, at least the outdoor shot. Noise seems to be OK for a compact camera.

Dunno if Canon will abandon the G series, but this looks like a good upgrade from a G3 or G5, short of a DSLR. Have to see what the images say about noise and shutter lag. I notice that the USM is used for zooming, not focusing though.

Noticed that too. Acctually, I would have liked it the other way arround!

Me too, but evidently improvements have been made to the AF system as well. I'd just as soom have a manual zoom ring on the lens and a fast AF system.

Yeap, beside the typical TTL-focusing system it has a separat second one. Looks like one of these IR-systems used in film compact cameras.
