How does one express "Mediocre Haphazard Randomness"?

Is this really just an open free study?
01/06/2010 07:58:12 AM · #2
That's kind of what I'm getting from it...it's a free study. I show my signature style every time I do a free study. How can you vote on this? What if the photographer didn't show his style but copied someone elses style....will we know? DNMC?
01/06/2010 08:03:45 AM · #3
If someone copies my style and beats me at it I'll be pissed!

It may be a "free study" but it's a do your best you challenge. If your best "you" is mediocre haphazard randomness (and I really thought I'd trademarked that...) then go for it!

This challenge was my suggestion as seems to have been put up word for word. I'll be looking at my portfolio and try to assess my stylistic choices. I'll then try to replicate them in the context of a new (and beautiful!) image. Like the puzzle macro challenge, guessing (the photographer) will be part of the fun though I do anticipate scoring it as a Free Study, can't see how anything could be DNMC until after the photographers are revealed at roll-over. For me, this is about reflecting on your own work and producing something that communicates you as a photographer.

I'm pretty sure I don't have a style other than "bad". LOL! Guess I better look for something funny.

I took my entry today without even knowing the challenge existed, I just went to the place I get those shots.

This is exactly how I see this as well, and what I'll be doing. I think it's going to be good fun, and I think that the very biggest thing that could come out of it is if someone actually recognises it as mine, as unlikely as that might be!

No. You didn't go to the zoo to get a shot of a tiger did you?

You might as well as signed your entry ;)

Many of the great photographers develop their own style and can often be recognized by it. Do you have your own style? Maybe you do without knowing it or maybe you'll develop your own style as you get more experienced - who knows?

I will likely rate this challenge as a FS but at the same time leave comments that includes who I think took the shot if I think I have an idea. It will be fun to make guesses as long as photogs try to take shots that showcase their style. If this is the first challenge you submit to or you seldom submit, it will of course be impossible to guess yours. BUT, it will still be in the pool of images to guess and thereby adding to the fun :)

Well they are after the signature style after all :-P

And of course, the shot will tank as all my other ones have been doing lately.

I was asking myself the same question. And, if this style is well reproduced, will it get that same mediocre score or will it be rewarded with high(er) scores?

For some reason i feel like my entry will look like all my other photos....good thing I'm shooting Sunday...

WAIT...i just thought about something. If your signature style is nudes...will the people who hate nudes vote it lower even though it represents your signature style well? What about woodies, duckies, water drops, etc...all the things that certain people hate because they are in every challenge, but it embodies a persons signature style....what if your signature style is copying someone else's style?

OH man...if i get a low score, does that mean my signature style sucks and I need to change it? I might better sit this one out.

Now don't go trying to confuse people, that's my signature style.

Oooh. A very fun challenge indeed. I have a grueling portrait shoot to edit this week -- of a family of 7, so I said I wasn't going to take any more pictures until I caught up -- buttttt -- I may have to try this one. But I try lots of them, and then don't end up with anything remotely challenge-worthy, so I'll probably end up procrastinating on my family portraits while I chase a "signature style" photo and end up with nothing and be farther behind on my editing job. Sigh.

Not quite, my style is the subject matter most of all.

i do not agree with you... voters should understand what is your favorite genre, looking at your portfolio, for example, and vote based on what they see, if your photo reflects your style voting could be high, irrespective of the kind preferred by those who are voting .

if I have understood what this challenge means, everyone can post a photograph based on their personal skills and personal preferences, or not?

But of course they may not know whose image they are looking at, though they might be able to glean that by looking at various portfolios. I love to guess in the Free Studies, sometimes I get it right.

yes, of course, i'm very idiot sometimes! :-)

what I really want to tell is that voters must to think that the photograph that are observing is the style of the photographer that has shot it, they must vote always the photograph, even if is not their preferred genre...

they should vote that way but most don't, imho. take, for example, macro shots of flowers (sorry, if i'm picking on your signature style). i just don't like them that much. if a shot has excellent clarity, dof, detail or something else that makes it stand out from all the others, then i'll vote based on it's excellence and award accordingly. if it's just like all the other macro flower shots we've seen, i'm not going to be too excited to see it. i never give a vote less than a 4 without an explanation but it might get a 4 whereas a shot of the same quality of something i really like to see done might get a 5.

it's not something i do on purpose. in fact, i just realized that i do that. i consider myself pretty fair, too, so if i'm doing it, others are too.
