Can I play?
This can all be done in CS4 but the Nik plugins help make this a 5min job.
Crop
Nik define noise reduction
Nik darken/lighten to lighten head
Dodge and burn to contrast background
Nik Pro contrast to bost overall contrast
Nik low key on background only to add depth
Nik color stylizer to add a colour wash to the entire image
sharpen on squirrel only
Nik noise reduction to surpress all the editing artifact
resize to 800 and save for web at 300kb

Processing:
- Increase contrast on midtones
- Darken shadows
- Diffusion layer (gaussian blur, and layer set to screen), only on lights
- dodge/burn eyes
- Drop saturation on distracting background objects
- Give desaturated background a slight blue tint to match rest of background
- "Adamus" sharpening/resize routine with halo's masked out
- increase global contrast with curves layer
(Midtones, lights, shadows masks all done by creating luminosity masks) |

I couldn't figure a way to keep the tall stack so I ended up with this...
A little this, a little that, a little Topaz, etc. |

Here's mine for everyone to play with. Sorry I put it in wrong size at first. This edit should help.

Not 100% happy that I did this just how I originally envisioned.

cloned out 1/8 of a surfer
Selected background and with Selective Colors muted it and added Nik Noise removal.
Selected inverse and gave that section a touch of Topaz Clarity. Punched up colors with Selective Colors.
Gave entire image another dose of Nik Noise removal (Defin)
When I took this image back in 2004 I knew nothing about processing. And while I did play with some in the series back then, I didn't get to this one. So this is as new to me as it is to everyone else. And dang, is it a difficult image! I like some of the other interpretations a lot more!

I must admit I did a few versions before I ended up with the one I posted :)

Could do with a lot more subtle work on the halos and noise reduction.

So, better late than never, but I've decided how to give out the PP prize. I'll accept originals thru Wednesday. We'll continue accepting PP'd originals thru Friday. Then, Friday night, I'll post each original alongside each PP and let the original's owner choose each winning PP (only originals with 2 PP attempts will be eligible). That will leave us with 5 or 6 winners, but if we do this anew each week throughout the month, then the person with the most wins can be our February PP winner.
Still a side challenge in progress, but thanks for the participation! Any thoughts appreciated.
Maybe by the time it's over, I'll get it organized. LOL
Edit to add: I hope everyone else is enjoying this as much as me!

It all sounds good to me, cynthiann. Tell me, do we submit more than one original through the month? Or one a week? Or?

I had some extra time today, so did another one...
crop; crop some more.
Levels: 15, 0.90, 241 RGB
Hue/Sat: Red: Hue -2; Sat. +2; Light, -7
After that, well - I use Selective Colors like a paint brush.
So there's a lot of fine tuning going on in here that can't be described.
Smart Sharpened the hair a bit, Noise Ninja on the face and skin.
Secret weapon: Just a dab of Topaz "Cartoon" at about the program's lightest power,
and then applied at 15% opacity. It brings out a few strands of hair and the eyes.

Here is my try at one of the great pictures.. I kind of got lost in the middle / so I will be crazy to try and post the steps here, unless someone wants to know!
ETA : I think I went overboard with the editing!

OKay, trying some new things out with the Topaz, I can not knock it without trying it!, So used Topaz clean x 2, Lassoed circle in middle and lightened, contrast all over, selective colours in blues/greens/cyans to an almost horrible colour, then turned it black and white, crop
again with the Topaz clean, selective colours , sharpened, overall saturation, crop
This one some more Topaz clean, then circles again with lasso, brightened middle, contrast, dodged the snow to brighten up, then black and white, really dark on the contrasts as i wanted to try to emulate night time, dodged the windows to bright to pretend they where lights in them, general all over sharpened again and crop
Not so happy with this one, overall I like it, but I do not like how I have made her skin blotchy. Maybe the red channel was up too much to start off with?????????, lassoed the eyes and sharpened, dodged, contrasts and major crop./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the first time i have ever done this, so am I doing it right ??? should I be adding what selective colours etc????
I say the more the better, since the challenge has become to get the most wins throughout the month. It's the PPers that are competing, not the contributors.
However, lets keep it down to 2 each per week for now and adjust as necessary so things don't get crazy. Obviously, PPers can do as many or as few as they want throughout the month.
Sorry, but the first time I uploaded this I resized it, and then wondered why I couldn't find a 'View full-sized image' to right click on.
