I think that forum posts should not be editable after a certain amount of time, maybe 10 minutes or so. And/or after someone has responded to the post. (That's hard, since responses sometimes happen quickly.) It just bothers me that people post things that get a strong reaction, then they edit their post so that the original message is removed or completely changed, and the responses then make no sense. It seems a bit disingenuous.

But I'm not saying that people shouldn't be allowed to modify their posts within a brief period of making them. I understand the need or desire to fix mistakes, qualify remarks, or remove your foot from your mouth before anyone sees it. :)

Along the last line, maybe even allow someone to delete a post until someone responds on the thread. At that point the post stays but can be edited for a short time, and then it becomes locked. If someone wants to ammend or quantify what they said, they can make a follow-up post.

What bugs me is, I just saw another thread which generated a couple pages of responses, then the original poster went back over a day later and removed the text of the original post. (It wasn't even really controversial.)

That's why I do a quick reply, with full quote, in case someone says something they might regret later. :)

I had something insightful here, but just in the spirit of the thread, I have edited it. No one quoted me, so what I said before is lost forever!!!

So maybe an "Auto-Jacko" reply feature - every thread post gets an automatic, full quote response, complete with a clever and witty comment. I like it. :)

I think that it's in the nature of the internet beast - half read a long post, get flushed about some part of it, respond hastily before others drown our voice out, press the post button and....

.... read at a more leisurely pace the fuller story, see what went wrong, get embarrassed, and head for the edit button.

We can't/ shouldn't change that.

Very few threads are destroyed that way, while a lot more are saved. I vote to keep this as is.

I'd be pretty pissed if I couldn't go back and fix a spelling mistake. I already don't like the fact that I can't edit the title or delete my post...

Lets not make this so serious it's not fun!

You can request a Site Council member change the title of a thread if there's a typo or serious confusion about the topic.

I've seen several instances recently (the insanity Jacko's spawned here notwithstanding :) ), which prompted the suggestion. Also, for the most part the few other forums I frequent have this kind of restriction. It doesn't stop you from second guessing a post, but does help dissuade you from going and destroying the context of an established thread.
