parallel could mean 'similar to' - the dictionary has quite
a few interpretations. please dont let this be a boring
literal translation. i read somewhere that 'ideas or concepts
should be more important than pretty pictures'. this is 2004
for pete's sake... |

But the challenge isn't "parallel", it's "parallel lines". How many definitions are there of parallel lines? :-) The point of DPC is to meet the challenge, not try and stretch it as far as possible. |

so parallel lines could only mean lines that are parallel???
its ok to meet the challenge but if everyone met it in the
same manner, what is the point, actually. |

While I would agree that in the past, voters have been a little rigid with their interpretation of the challenge (I got killed on Urban Landscape because I didn't show a full building in my picture), this particular challenge doesn't have a lot of wiggle room.
Either your picture contains parallel lines or it doesn't. Of course, you can participate in any way you wish as far submitting a picture goes. |

I think you will find a HUGE variey of photos from people who do take photos of parallel lines. The challenge is created to get us to look at things as photographers in new ways. The challenge aspect of this site is what I enjoy the most. Can I expand my horizons as a photographer and look at the world around me to find a new and creative way to capture the challenge for the week. Never yet have I seen two identical photos... some choose the same idea but they are always done differently. I have already taken a series of parallel line photos but have not had one jump out yet that I can say wow to...so I am still looking and thinking.... Stick to the challenge guidelines for the photo you submit... for your own photography be a bit creative if you want... just don't submit it for the challenge.

Why not be creative and submit it to the challenge and let the votes be cast and land where they may? You can submit whatever you want, just be prepared for low scores, comments you may not agree with, and DQ requests.
Those who choose to head for the margins in their creativity should not be surprised when they find that is where their idea will dwell. |

it's not "ok" to meet the challenge, it's required! |

I'm curious: should the lines be parallel in the photo, or if parallax makes parallel lines interesting, is that ok? For example, if you shot down the rails, they would converge in the distance. So they wouldn't be parallel in the photo. But clearly they are parallel.
Not sure I will submit anything, still thinking, but I wanted to know what others thought in this regard. |

I brought this up in another thread- also out of curiosity. The general consensus seemed to be that if the lines could reasonably be construed as parallel (even if converging in perspective), then most would be fine with that. There will always be some people with a more rigid definition, though. |

in my view, If the lines are persived as converging or if they converge too soon. Sets the differance.
_______

These lines are parallel.
Parallel lines--- are two coplanar lines that never intersect. They always have an equal distance between them. stands for "is parallel to".
Think that summs it up.

there are TONS of parallel lines:
road markings, fences, buildings (siding, columns, roofing, window treatments/blinds,and much more), car trim (huibcaps - parallel circular lines?) trees perhaps, pencils, lined paper, parade or marching bands, baseboards, striped sheets, lampshades, shadows, wires, jet contrails, headlights of a car at night - need i go on?
I hope we see NO pet, cloud or flower pics! |

Who needs railings: When my dog stands upright, her legs are parallel.

How about a photo, a portrait of a face to a person whom is in Jail. Looking through parallel bars. Hmmm, meets both challenges of "portrait" and "parallel lines." Can you summit the same photo to each separate challenges? Not that I really would do that. Just and interesting twist to this challenge(s). |

More thoughts....
awnings, american flag, retaining walls, stripes on buildings or cars, trim or grill on car, a grille or grille marks on a steak, a cd rack, tire tread, tire marks/tracks, skid marks, the impressoion left on skin from a bra or underwear or socks...
is a striped cat composed of parallell lines? and if the cat is walking on a railroad track, carrying a flower and walking into the sunset, does that count for more?? |

I thought the idea was to be creative? Did I get it wrong? |

I too would like to know which of the above would be ok.
HELP WANTED: PRETENTIOUS VOTERS. If you are a pretentious voter which of the above lines would you accept and which would you mark down.

Given that the challenge definition does not specify whether the lines are to be parallel in real life or must appear parallel within the finished image, both seem acceptable to me.
Personally I think it's a shame to stretch the definition just for the sake of stretching it when it already gives such freedom of subject material and style.
In my opinion, and it just my own opinion, "parallel lines" is a phrase in it's own right referring to two or more lines that remain equidistant. Whilst "parallel" on it's own has a number of interpretations including "similar" or "simultaneous" those don't really fit when using the phrase "parallel lines".
And that's how I'll be viewing things.
Doesn't mean that I won't see an interpretation that isn't the standard one and think it's genius and deserves a 10 though! I might well do, who knows?

And I know how much Bestagents likes cats, flowers, sunsets, etc. so I concur. You bet such an image counts for more! |

a ribbon cable is certainly parallel lines!
I am trying to succeed without going abstract. Took 50+ photos of diferent things today, and later or tomorrow will take a look and see what works. For another contest what jumped out at me from my efforts got nothing there (different voting method).
*Things I think are NOT parallel: cat's whiskers, hair follicles, eyelids, sunsets, children (including twins).
Some that may be: scar, close up of strait teeth, certain tattoos, hardwood floors.
Also, read the challenge "parallel lines provide or strengthen the composition" - hmm, strengthen - that leaves more area for interpretation now doesn't it?
The good floats to the top, the bad sinks. many can't seem to tell the difference.
