So something like this wouldn't do well in the 'Portrait from Behind' challenge?

I think the perspective is much different than most dogs doing their duty.

Are you going to make me wait for the Free Study, or did John Lennon happen to write a song about that?

Yeah... It's called "Imagine"!

Ok on the serious side...

I would like to ban all toilet related shots. I don't score them as "1" but they don't do well in my book. I guess I just don't want to see that. Simple as that.

This is hilarious. It'd make a great speed challenge for april fools day. Cram as many "mistakes" as possible into one shot. Blue ribbon goes to the lowest score.

yes!!! No. Wait. I do that anyway.

I cant understand why anyone would vote a photo down because of the title - I am not a fan of titles at all and I dislike some of the titles that people use but the photo should speak enough without the need for a title.

Voting a 1 because the subject is of somthing dead? What's that about?

Voting a photo down becuase it is of a child/children?? - Pathetic !

..no wonder some people get disillusioned with DPC

..and I dont care what vote I get 1 to 10 makes no difference to me one little bit, I just like taking photos, if people like them that is fine, if they dont, well that is fine with me

:-P

Thank you everyone for your honesty and insights. I found it very interesting to hear so many views on this subject.
I'm not sure how anyone can say another persons view or opinion is invalid, since opinions are like bellybuttons, we all have one.

For the record, I give out only a few 1's and do vote each image on its merits. I don't like death and prefer to celebrate life. I'm into my 40's and death steals you friends.
A bad title may drop a 7 to a 5 from me, or good bumps it up to a 9. I find words to be very powerful things and enjoy the effort required to find appropriate words for an image.
Effort gets rewarded, snapshots and bad titles get downgraded. Its all part of the creative process and the history of art clearly shows a tendency for artists to title their works.
Would "Eathrise" be the same titled "Stuff" or "Image 92042-23"? To me, it would not be. (One of histories greatest titles and images)
I stare at my entry a long time, racking my brain for some connecting words that will enhance my images existence.
An image of a sailboat crashing through a wave titled "a sailboat" vs "The Cutter" is worth a few more points from me and is more memorable.
Oh yea, and animal ass, I've hauled, shoveled, carried, dragged, dumped, stepped in, tripped over, and with a front end loader moved more tons of manure than I like to remember. Forgive me, I've starred at the back end of a poo-machine enough. For butt images, I'll look to fotomann_forever port, thank you.

That's not going to happen. Just continue to register your disapproval with a low vote.

From this thread.

An image with a good title will trump a great image without a good title.

I no longer ask myself why I hardly participate in challenges anymore. This is part of the reason.

Totally pathetic reason to ding a photo. Totally! I cannot believe that this tripe isn't being challenged by anyone else. Everyone must be doing it.

No wonder participation is plummeting.

amsterdamman, how does a dead frog steal your friends?

Has anyone mentioned Woodies or Booze yet?

I don't like these and if anyone wants to talk about it I'll be at the 'bar'!! :-)

"An image with a good title will trump a great image without a good title."

A good title charges the image. A poor title runs it down. How much it effects your or my measure of it should depend on the degree of damage. That's all.

Some people like frogs Jac, not everyone finds a squashed animal lovely. Have you read the threads saying goodbye to a pet, be it a dog, cat or even amphibian?
Its not uncommon for humans to feel an attachment to an animal, and many humans dedicate their lives to helping animals as well as people.
Doc is struggling with cancer just now, do you think looking at images that focus on death would help him feel better? They make me feel worse.

So Jac, what reasons do you use to "ding a photo" I'm interested in hearing what you consider valid reasons to reduce a score.
At 5.55 average score given you clearly find faults, and not only with others honesty.

Jac will only ding a photo when he's pretty sure it will annoy somebody... ;P

Not all photography is feel-good, nor should it be. I dissent sharply from you on this issue. Photography is a medium for expression, neither good nor bad. You choose what you want to say with it, what you want to draw attention to.
Alas, Robert Adams said it very well;
"At our best and most fortunate we make pictures because of what stands in front of the camera, to honor what is greater and more interesting than what we are. We never accomplish this perfectly, though in return we are given something perfect- a sense of inclusion. Our subject thus redefines us, and is part of the biography by which we want to be known."
Just as the smiling boy redefines and changes our self, our image, our interpretation of life, so too does the tattered refugee. I can't help but think how wretched a form of art photography would be if it only consisted of the feel-good.

HA!

Here's proof dead things can score well...

I've been wanting to post this since the subject was mentioned, but since it was still in voting, I had to wait....

That should be easy - A photo of a naked woman holding a gun and a bible at a beach with tilted horizon and some camera shake with the title being "Nekkid WoMN". Guarantee you nothing but 1s :)

Don't forget the sunset/sunrise!

If only I could recognize yours while voting Doc. ;þ

I don't ding photos. I have to admit that lately I've been giving 4s, 5s or 6s on just about all images I vote on. That's why my average given is going down and approaching the 5ish level.

amsterdamman, I give a lower score on technically deficient images and that doesn't mean blurry images get an automatic low vote. I will never vote down an image because Posthumous says they suck, either. :) I don't vote down water drops or flower shots because that's just plain ridiculous. Those who do it either cannot appreciate the work involved or they just do not understand how they're done and cannot do it themselves. Look at the profiles of those who consistently complain about water drop shots. You'll see a pattern.

I seldom scored under a 4 just because I see no sense in not giving even a snapshot some merit.

BIG BLACK DOUBLE SIDED BORDERS forgive me, I just hated it. I did score them at least 1 lower than what I think they should be. For me it was such a waste of space. Now I have chilled a bit, still regard at least 80% a total inappropriate monstrosity, but scoring what it should be.

Lesson for me, do not score low on personal issues, score the image for what it is worth using a standard, fair and "defendable" grading system. After all, is it really about me, or is it about the image in front of me?
12/15/2010 04:30:44 AM · #98
But the letterbox border doesn't waste space. If you still go 800 px wide with your photo, the letterbox doesn't waste any image dimensions. In fact, I often think it helps balance it out when you've got a narrow pano crop. Now, large, unnecessary borders that do reduce the size of the actual photo do bother me.

I don't vote them down, but I don't score them astronomically high either. I definitely meet your criteria otherwise. Can't do it myself, my profile shows no useable "eye candy". I complain because I cannot do.

That's easy to refute. Most of my ribbons go to shots I can't take myself. I give low scores to water drops because they don't pass the "so what?" test.
