I recently bought a YN-462 flash for off camera use. I bought this model as it was inexpensive and I could get it quickly from a US distributor on Amazon.
For this kind of manual off-camera usage I'm pleased with it and like it more than my 430EX, (which powers down after several minutes and I cannot disable the function). The Yongnou stays on until I turn it off and the only control is a power dial and a tilt/swivel head. I'm ready to buy another one or two flashes and was wondering if I am giving up anything major by going with this and not a model with a zoom head, sync port, or other features, such as this model which is more than twice as much.

I've got to replace a few Vivitar 285HV flashes that I have killed over the past year and am definitely looking at these models.

Ultimatley only you can say whether or not those features are worth the extra cash to you. The zooming of the head lets you "throw" the light further and focus it into more of a beam, IMO this isn't a deal breaker since you can use light modifiers for this type of stuff, but if you use the flash bare at say a basketball game alot, this might be important to you.
Im assuming your getting the light to trigger as a slave, however if you ever wanted to use say a pocket wizard so you can radio trigger the flash, then a sync port would probably be big for you. However, there are work arounds to that issue too by using those sync port hot shot adapters.
I'm not sure if there is a power output difference, but more power is (typically) better as it gives you more control over a wider range of ambient light conditions.
Either way is seems like a great bang for the buck flash. Even the more expensive one is dirt cheap as far as full feature flash's go. My appologize if you know all that stuff already. |

I'm using RF-602 triggers from the same manufacturer on the hotshoe. I think if I were going to upgrade to PW's I'd also be buying better flashes to go with them.

Yes, there is a power difference. The YN-462 is just a little weaker than my Canon flash, which has been plenty powerful for me.

Yes, I knew those things, but your laying it out also helped me focus on what I want and need out of it. Even the cheap ones are an upgrade in convenience from the optically triggered Vivitar's I've been using (which were a good, inexpensive way to get started.).

What vendors? It's usually recommended to buy from the manufacturer, HKYongnou, but they no longer offer the 462, so I will have to get it from another vendor if I want that one. I was going to use one with the "top rated seller" thingy.

I bought two of YN-560, I think best there is for the price and features... I keep them both in my Canon bag, with three lenses and 40D, along with battery pack and extra sync wires :) |

I have the 430EX and you can turn off the auto power down. Custom function #1 needs to be set to 1. See page 20 of the manual |
