I wonder if there is a big diffrence between the 3g, 3gs and the iPhone4? |

What are you comparing? Price? Size? Functionality? |

In terms of usability, the 3Gs is a huge improvement over the 3G, and the iPhone 4 is a huge improvement over the 3Gs. Version 4 is simply faster in all its functionality. The Retina Display in 4 is alone worth upgrading for (I think this is going to be the standard display for all devices in future, if they can get the cost down). The camera in four is superior. Overall, it's a much better device than the previous versions. |

I have a 3G, and because of the software updates, it's almost unusable. |

I have a 32gig 3Gs and a 32gig iPhone4 and absolutely love the 4. Its faster and as mentioned if you are picky about the retina display is well worth the cost along with the surprisingly descent flash on the 4 as well.

I have the 32gig 3GS on the AT&T network, which has good coverage in my area. The phone is very useful and efficient, but I will update to the iPhone 4 for the superior camera and Retina Display. I'm waiting for two more months for my initial contract term to expire. More discounts are available at upgrade then.
eta: IPhone available on Verizon network today. Verizon customers aren't able to surf the Web or exchange email while they're talking on their phone. (A juggling act I always try to do when driving my car in fast traffic.)

Thanks for the good advice! I agree! ...As for the iPhone 5 release date, June of 2011 is the rumored drop zone for the new product... |

Thanks to all who replied! I think I am convinced now to get a 4. I was a little leery about the 4 of what i heard from a few outsiders. Oh, one mor quick question; is it worth getting it jailbroke and unlocked?? |

Might as well wait until the Iphone comes out on Verizon. At least the coverage and customer service will be much better. I would not let the fact that I can't talk and surf the web at the same time be a factor. I have never had the need to do this since I have had my phone. It just isn't practical to have to do that enough to affect my decision. And the iphone 5 comes out in june/july for at&t AND Verizon anyway. Just hope there's not a new way to hold it to get reception! ;) |

always worth it to jailbreak it. You WILL lose the warranty if you do that, though.
My opinion, wait for the iphone 5 on verizon

I moved from Verizon to AT&T a few years ago after being a customer for more than 10 years. I got tired of every phone I bought had many of its functions crippled (IE: iTunes on the last one I had. Phone capable, verizon disallowed). I liked their service, but they are more expensive and have never had dropped calls on either service. Choose the service that suits you.
Warranty means nothing. After Jailbroken it can be put back to factory specs with Restoring on iTunes.
jeger-stop upgrading the iOS or you can go back to a previous one that worked better. I am on 4.1.1, jailbroken and have no problems at this time.

I had a 3G up until two weeks ago. I agree with jeger about software updates making it unusable. I downgraded the OS back to 3.something. Supposedly their 4.2 firmware fixes the speed "issues," but I didn't want to trust it.
Now I have an iPhone 4 and the speed, display, and camera are all amazing, I even get faster data rates than my old phone. I'm pretty content with the iPhone now.
Jailbreaking is plenty safe as long as you don't use the early methods with crazy "WARNING, THIS MIGHT BREAK YOUR PHONE" messages all over them. Seriously, I've jailbroken my phone many times, and all you have to do to restore it back is run a software update in iTunes (or restore it to a factory firmware).
That being said, there is only one feature I really crave from jailbreaking anymore (I haven't done it yet, because it takes a couple hours for me to get set up to the point I'm comfortable going through with it[making sure to backup and sync my phone fully so I don't lose stuff]), and that is SBSettings. It's basically a menu that drops down when you swipe your finger across the top menu bar. It drops down over the top of the app you're running and lets you change settings without having to go find the Settings app on your springboard and open it. It's super convenient for when you need to adjust brightness quickly, among other things. Apple really needs to make this a native feature and I wouldn't care about jailbreaking at all. It used to be that you needed to jailbreak for video support (still do on the older models) or cut and paste, even though the hardware supports it just fine, now they've included those features in the phone, so SBSettings is the only draw jailbreaking has left.

I agree regarding Verizon (crippling their devices and adding wacky Verizon-only stuff) â€Â¦ plus their logo sucks -- but not sure if that should be weighed in the decision ;)
Here's my advice: AT LEAST wait until a few weeks after Verizon starts selling hte iPhone (should be next month early). Then see what people are saying. Former At&t customers will SURELY have an opinion. Don't jump in right now unless you are a big fan of At&t.
Also: regarding talking while emailing / surfing, Verizon is rumored to be wokring on a quick fix for this. Another reason to WAIT -if not until a few weeks after Verizon comes out with the iPhone, then untill summer when the iPhone 5 should come out (this is what I am doing).
Currrently I have the 3gS and the only thing I know that is a major diff from the iPhone 4 is the screeen, camera / flash, and inner gyroscope - but I have more than enough to satisfy my needs at this point. Really an awesome device that I never would have imagined I would utilize so much.

I think the timing of the iphone's availability for Verizon is odd. Presumably it had to wait until 2011 since AT&T had the exclusivity contract thru 2010.
It seems odd to introduce the iphone 4 in February, though, when anyone who is interested in an iphone will surely know that an iphone 5 is likely to be announced/available in June/July. Verizon no doubt does not want to lose 4 months of sales, but being locked into a 2 year contract so soon before a new phone comes out seems likely to result in a lot of annoyed customers (even though they should realize this will happen).
It seems unlikely that the Verizon iphone cycle will be different from the normal cycle (i.e. ViPhone5 in Feb 2012), since that would ensure that AT&T always had a head start on new versions.
I suppose the iphone 5 will not be the huge leap from iphone 4 that the 4 was over the 3g, so maybe enough people will be willing to have an iphone 4 now and wait for iphone 6. It will be interesting to see how the verizon sales ramp up from Feb, then again from the summer, how many people choose to wait. |

I think the bigger issue is that the iPhone 4 for Verizon was being engineered and manufactured before there was any news of an iPhone 5. They're sort of stuck going through with it now, since they have to sell the units they've been producing.
Also, when they released the 3G (and possibly the 3GS? I can't remember) AT&T offered an "upgrade" plan, when you could trade in your old phone and (I think) renew your contract from the upgrade date.
