Originally posted by Blinks: Bestagents, I agree with you in some aspects, but I also have a bone to pick with you.
Recently...VERY recently I received a comment from you that said I should never have entered my pic in the challenge. Now, you are entitled to your own opinion, but to say I shouldn't have entered this pic without an explination was to be honest just very discouraging. If you agree this is a place to learn, especially in the open challenge, could you please give some constructive critisim? |
I do not recall your pic off the top of my head, but I saw several in the 'Out of Place' of challenge that I think do not belong - for example, one of a cat standing behind a tree. Perhaps in a catless world, this is out of place, but not to me. There was at least one pic that (to me) was so badly out of focus that my 6 month old could probably do a better job of focusing. On some of these I left minimal comments - I didn't feel the need to point out the obvious. Perhaps I am mistaken, I mean, if these are honestly entered and thought to be on target and good pics, then the entrant needs to be told the obviuos i suppose.
There, I have now learned something. I will go and make some comments.
edit: inserted this: am commenting on my 1 and 2 votes. One entry is sooooo out of focus i cannot fathom the idea the entrant had - it is not soft focus, it is NO focus. Must have been intentional. Need I point this out?
BTW i voted an all images, and commented on 71 (29%)
my entry is at 5.03 with 152 votes and only 1 comment.

This was an April Fools joke, right? You're three meager challenge entries aren't exactly blowing me away... |

Glacierwolf,
While I can agree to the points that many submission seem to be made for the sake of entering and people could be more critical towards themselves,
I also think you are overestimating yourself and not appreciating the value of other peoples comments enough. And not applying the same standards to yourself, as you prescribe to others.
You might be a paid photographer with a decent hourly rate, but I would not say your submissions are Mational Geographic quality, as you would want to see from others.
It might be the best you can do and you might support your entry with your whole heart, having put your soul into it, as you require others to do, but many others don't feel the same way about your pictures. Who has decided that you are right and they are wrong, or vice versa ?
Everybody decides what is good by their own standards, and decides whether to enter or not. Nobody else has to decide it for them.
And if you are not open for the comments of others, not appreciating other people's views, even if they novices, well then maybe this site is not for you.
Take your own advice.

Scott K
I think you hit the nail on the head.
I removed my own rant about Glacierwolf's own submissions thinking I had been dragged into an April Fool by a lonely Troll.
I think I was right

Glacierwolf, as a professional with 30 years experience and booked 2 years in advance at $90-$120/hr, I really would expect you to be able to earn some ribbons, and at least to do better than 5.0804. With three entries averaging below the 50th percentile maybe you ought to spend more time looking at our entries and trying to learn from the comments of others. |

Kevin you really should go take a look at your own pictures and seriously think about taking your own advice. I mean that sincerely, because you do make some good points. edit* Of course I'm a neophyte so I guess my opinion doesn't matter.

Just came home from 4 days shooting the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival (just North of Seattle) and caught up with this thread and the email about it. I've deleted my original entry and follow up. Pretty obvious that the majority, although not everyone, here is more interested in starting a flame than promoting better photography.
Another site I would recommend looking into is photosig.com and artsig.com where they have a very different critique system. On those sites your pictures or art work needs to attract someone to give a comment.

If you approach a challenge with no expectations you will never be disappointed, but you can be most pleasantly surprised.
