My son who has been working in Canada for over two years will be going to Hawaii (North Shore) for the last two weeks of February.
We thought we might go and holiday with him at this time but the time is short to book anything and everything I seem to look up is full.
Wondering if any DPC Hawaii locals can suggest good (reasonably priced - not the backpackers as I see it has bedbugs on the reviews) accommodation for the North Shore area and Waikiki.
He is staying at the Billabong surf house (that's the reason for accommodation at the North Shore area)
Thinking that split accommodation between both areas would be a good idea.
Suggestions appreciated. |

Not too sure about the North Shore, but from what I remember the Ilima Hotel in Waikiki is a nice place to stay. While it's not exactly the Moana Surfrider the rooms were clean and their units include full kitchens. Price-wise I believe we typically spent about $140 per night.
It's also in a convenient location since The International Market Place is basically right across the street and Waikiki Beach is in walking distance. |

Everything in Oahu is reasonably close. My wife and I will be heading to Oahu next week so we'll keep a sharp eye out... |

The Billabong house? Nice! does he work for Billabong? That house has Pipeline as its backyard...damn, he's lucky.
The only hotel i can think of on the north side (or near the north side) is Turtle Bay click here. It used to be owned by Hilton, not sure if it still is though. Nice hotel, on the water and away from the hustle and bustle. Can be costly though. There are also a lot of vacation home rentals but this time of year (the height of the surfing season), most of those are all booked up.
As for waikiki, aside from the regular hotels, one option would be vacation rentals in one of the condos. Prices are reasonable and some do come with kitchens or kitchenettes. I know the owner the owner of this company, he takes pretty good care of his rental units and is an all around good guy click me. Most of these units are a couple of blocks from waikiki beach. Otherwise, try googling waikiki vacation rentals or you could look on trip advisor for recommendations too.
The last option I can think of is staying on the west side at the Koolina Resort. Beautiful hotel, again far from the hustle and bustle of waikiki click. This one is probably the most option of the 3.

Hi Mark
Thanks for the info.
Have come across Turtle Bay but all booked.
Have seen the following and it's about the only thing that i can find that isn't booked but it's not on the right side of the island.
Has a lot of vacant dates - would there be a reason for this. Location? Condition? Reviews seem OK.
Your thoughts.

Nope but knows somebody. My daughter also used to go out with a Billabong sponsored guy - Wade Goodall (Profile. He recently had a bad accident and broke his ankle badly whilst surfing. Still recovering.
We don't require anything fancy, just clean and tidy with a comfy bed. If the weather is good we won't spend much time there anyway.

oh yeah, i know who wade goodall is, air specialist to say the least.
for that condo in punaluu, i know that place fairly well. my family spent summers about 8 houses down from there and i have friends that live in that condo. the condo itself is ok. well maintained (from what i remember) and actually not that far from the north shore. it's probably about 15 minutes from turtle bay, and about 1/2 hour from pipe. you're on the water too so that's a huge plus. the beach there is gorgeous.
one good thing about staying there vs waikiki is that the drive from waikiki will probably take much longer. during the winter surf season, the traffic in and out of the north shore is horrendous. it's pretty much 1 lane in and out. from the punaluu condo, you're mostly going in the opposite direction of the major part of the traffic. the traffic is at its worst when there are waves, it's not uncommon for it to take 2 hours to go from one end of the north shore to the other when the waves are pumping. |

We stayed at the Turtle Bay resort once, you do feel isolated there and it wasn't really for us, although we did have a nice 1 bedroom bungalow. You needed a car while staying there to get around.
What about some of those holiday home rental sites. I have a friend that has used a rental home north of Waikiki without any problems, everything is catered for. If you like, I can find out more from them? It was something similar to this one.
