First day off in a long time. Brand new tripod and a ND filter to play with. I was determined to try to shoot some moving water/clouds for the first time with a slow shutter. I actually dreamed about the plan last night, I was so excited. I woke up at the crack of dawn, packed all my gear, a little concerned about the weather but I was completely determined that this was going to happen. I drove to a local conservation area and exited the car, battled my way along a water logged trail, to reach the edge of the lake. Here is a fun fact, 60km/hour winds are much more powerful beside an extremely large body of water such as Lake Ontario. I could hardly stand up straight, forget set up a tripod I am using for the first time (and really would it have stayed in place?) The sand was flying, my hair was flying, I lost my hat in the wind, and just when it couldn't get worse, a sudden hail storm had me huddled under some scrub laughing hysterically because I am such an idiot and because those pellets were packing some punch.

Dammit I had a plan!

I guess we all have had similar experiences :) That's the fun of the outdoor photography!

I hope you weren't changing lenses in this weather! I did that once on the beach in very windy weather (well, probably more than once! I am a slow learner!) and had an expensive sensor cleaning job.

Bummer! I hate missed opportunities, but at least you got a good story out of it.

I've been waiting months to get a re-shoot of this photo. I had it all planned out. On Feb 29, March 1, and March 2 the sun would come up directly behind the mountain and provide a great sunburst. I woke up at 5:30 all three days only to find heavy cloud cover :( I'll just have to wait until October to get another chance.

Nope, definitely did not change lens, I hardly even took my camera out from between my layered clothing. It was so windy, I never would have been able to even hold the camera straight, forget not shaking. It's funny, I have a good sense of humour about it, but man did I ever want to play with my gear today. I've been compromising by playing around indoors with a macro shot for the current challenge.

That's a beautiful capture bhuge! I can see how you might be disappointed when you were foiled 3 days in a row from taking another like it.

I haven't been lucky enough to do something like that in a while. I would have still been snapping away, handheld, with my little water proof P&S Fuji, and hanging on to something with my other hand.
Our weather bummer this week is that we were planning a small "star party" where everyone brings their cameras and telescopes to look at the sky and share astronomy knowledge and stories, but that's out with clouds and possible sprinkles.
Maybe tomorrow will be better. The plan is to shoot the championship swamp buggy races at Naples Fl, with pit passes. Some of my friends have machines in the races.

Welcome aboard, Lindsey - I read your tale on my phone standing in a parking lot and laughed out loud. People always look at you a little funny when you're standing by yourself in a parking lot laughing...

Better luck next time with your outing, but you've definitely got the right attitude and the right spirit for this odd hobby of ours.

Haha, nice choice of weather! It rarely gets so windy around here. I live near the west end of the lake. I was woken up at 3am by a garbage can sliding down the street. A windy day!
