In Adobe Photoshop, select "Layers" and "Layer Style" then select "dropdown shadow". There are all sorts of options you can play with such as opacity of shadow, direction etc

I should do this before pasting 4x6 in canvas or after

After you paste the photo. When you paste it look over in the layer's palette and you'll see a new layer for the pasted photo. Double-click on the new layer in the palette and it will bring up the layer styles dialog.
In the styles dialog when you configure your dropshadow, make sure that the "Use global light" button is selected so all the photos with a shadow will have the same light source orientation.

And as the guys have suggested, by doing it with layers will enable you to edit each individual layer at a later date, if you make sure you save the original psd file before you flatten it to a jpeg or whatever. |

General: do you have access to a Library that you can borrow a Photoshop book from? There is a good one called Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book, and is available, I think, for most versions of Photoshop. I would guess there are other good books out too.
Do you have access to this kind of thing in India?

Second thought.. I think there are also websites that have Photoshop Tutorials.
Not saying you can't/shouldn't ask here in forums.... that is great.. just wondered, since you have so many questions, if it might facilitate you - make your efforts more productive? Just thinking of you. |

You could use differently-oriented shadows, for example, all pointing towards the nearest corner of the canvas, to simulate a light from straight above an array of images stacked up. |
