Impressive. I can never aim properly. I don't know how many pictures of chair legs and sidewalks I have. I should probably delete them from the archive. |

My take on street photography is that there are no rules.. That's the best part! Shoot anything that tells a story and strikes a chord. I would look to shoot in aperture priority mode. Not wide open, though Jagar's portfolio has some excellent examples shot with his fave lens (35mm f1.4).. But then again, I ain't got the moves like Jagar!;-)

Why from the hip? |
Because it lets you take pictures when people think you're just standing around (i.e. relatively secretly), and because it can give you a low-angle perspective which would otherwise require an awkward and not very subtle posture ...

And this is one I will leave to the greats. I wouldn't mind giving it a try but sadly all we have around here are streets. No interesting buildings to give a proper backdrop and no people milling around doing interesting candid things. I suppose I could take a picture of some people riding or jogging down a lonely highway but somehow I think that it isn't quite what people have in mind when judging street photography entries. |

Who has the say that street photography is only candids? A split millisecond glance, not candid anymore ;) If it's found on the street, it's street photography. |

Yep, big difference between posed street candids (yes, there is such a thing by my definition) and "getting caught" in street photography.

A lot of Steve's(Pawdrix) pics also contain less than candid pics but would still be considered street. He didn't put the people there but found them, made a connection and in cases(not sure about the details) would/might ask if he can take their photo. Street photography? I would still think so. He didn't just tell the model or client to meet them on the street. What if it wasn't setup to be shot there. One of my older pics, street?
ETA: I'm not quoting Steve. Those are just my thoughts. Pending mind changing to begin.

Here are some that I shot this weekend in the attempt to come across something interesting.
Some of my older faces
All of these are candids. |

Let's all remember this, as posted by bvy:
Wikipedia defines Street Photography as "a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings." Political conventions? Really? Well, it's a start. The two takeaways from this are "candid" and "public." Street Photography doesn't even have to happen on a street. How about that?
Here's hoping the voters realize it doesn't have to be shot on the "mean streets" to qualify. |

So is, for example, a picture of people on a float at Macy's Parade, Street Photography? Or is that not candid enough? ;-Þ |

Sounds like finding excuses but it's really hard to find proper time to shoot. At least for me. I went out 2x30 minutes and literally snapped from the hip. One of the rounds also included a 15 mins of to come Rail challenge. I might have got something (reminds a bit of film waiting for the results) and I will submit regardless of the candid, street etc definitions. I'll treat the results as slices of the street.
On a side note it's becoming a bit too obsessive taking pics for DPC with the mere purpose of getting ribbons, blings, comments, attention. Maybe I'm just a fox and the grapes are goddam sour!
Cheers

As for me, well, I thought I got a few "decent" shots that I think would have done fairly well in this challenge, and then one which I think may not do too well.. But I decided to go with this one coz I thought it told a story and had a bit of street humor to it. Fingers crossed now! Lol;-) |

I had a discussion with a friend yesterday when i was showing her my shots, and she insisted that if people were indoors it would not be street photography. I disagreed, but I also think a few might slam such a shot in a challenge with that same thinking. My own definition is capturing a slice of life in the real world, often telling or implying a story. It is usually candid, but not always. Like any genre, there is a fuzzy edge to the collective definition.

I think I've read that once before when someone posted it for the HCB challenge. I think I violated about half those tips with my street entry. But that is just one man's approach, NOT a ruleset one has to stick to.
I will say I'm surprised this challenge is under advanced rules. I would have expected basic rules for this subject. (Not that I didn't take advantage of the opportunity to do some selective tweaking)

True. If you try to please everyone, it gets watered down and nothing stands out about it.

This challenge without you in it would be seriously missing something.
Anything candid will be considered street by me, the importance being putt on the instant captured, doesn't have to be in a street to be street and even if the subject is looking at the camera, we can usually tell if its spontaneous or not.
i only had a couple of hours to try for this but i had a good time and that's all that counts.
I do stone masonry, some days you pick a stone up, you face it and you instantly know where it should go, the day after its much harder and everything's an effort, street shooting is very similar for me. |
